The new weekly domain sales report is out at DNJournal.com and this will go down as a landmark week in industry history. Sex.com has officially changed hands for $13 million in the largest cash domain sale ever reported. We also learned about the largest sale we have ever seen for a domain with a "4" prefix.

.Coms ruled our latest all extension Top 20 sales chart taking 14 of the 20 entries. The non .com gTLDs and the Country Codes each had three representatives on the elite list. You can get all of the details here: http://www.dnjournal.com/domainsales.htm

One other note this week – a thank you to legendary domain investor Frank Schilling who wrote and published an article about me on his popular Seven Mile Blog Tuesday. A number of industry leaders also contributed to Frank’s piece and I was very moved by what they all had to say. For everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to assist Frank with the article and to all of you who posted in the comments section of his piece, I sincerely thank you for such a great honor! Frank’s story is here: http://domainnamesales.com/sevenmile/2010-11/greatness-in-our-everyday/

Sex.com sold?

Looks like sex.com has been sold for $13 Million through sedo (source: sedo rep on this forum, official sedo thread). Very good price, IMHO, considering current economy, domain market and heavy income drop in adult webmasters world.

its an incredible amount of money to pay for a domain name, especially as we're still in a recession.
it just goes to show the big spenders/investors have a lot of faith in the .com extension.

i wonder if it will ever actually get developed one day, or will it allways be flirted around as a commodity.

It would take a serious amount of development to make that kind of money back any time soon, lets hope they have an excellent plan in mind for it. It seems like the hugh prices of these generics makes it difficult to make a profit with them, like Business.com

Let's hope things work out better for sex.com and its new owner this time around.

I just got her sexy sister XRATEDSEX.com recently :guilty: It was a 1996 reg but lost its age :'( I hate when that happens!

The Sedo website is touting the sale. Now perhaps they will hire more employees.

$13 million is a lot for a domain only in people's minds. On Wall Street or in commercial real estate - it's pennies. And yes, some day I think domains will be selling at those levels (hope).

Very good price, IMHO, considering current economy, domain market and heavy income drop in adult webmasters world.

One of the funky things that occurs in economics is that a sector sometimes has to experience a bad contraction before valuations start shaking out.

In other words, the drop in revenue in the adult web business may have provide the impetus for more aggressive buying of the better domains.

I'd be interested to see sale results for other quality porn domains, to see whether there is a trend.

if the US keeps printing money, the domain will appreciate in terms of dollar.

I'd like to think domains will keep their value for years to come. However, I'm a bit of a pessimist...more of a realist.

Think of all the things going AGAINST domains

  1. Google and Firefox autofill (along with other browsers)
  2. Qr Codes
  3. Endless new extensions (further dilution)
  4. Smartphone Apps
  5. Questionable ICANN practices
  6. Cybersquatters

So in a way, owning an expensive domain today is a bit of a gamble tomorrow.

However, if you have a great name along with another skill (such as SEO, programming, content writing) you will increase your chances of being successful.

Anyone who has the balls to say with certainty that domains will hold their value five years from now is just simple minded and up for disappointment. :imho:

Wow, I wonder how much time it will take the buyer to recover that sum of money back
I also wonder how much the seller originally bought it for :D

I suppose that in any case the price will appear so high for that domain name.
