Thumbs up X.co - The Shortest Url Shortening service ever by GoDaddy

X.co

GoDaddy has just launched its very own Url Shortening service which IMHO is going to be a huge success because:

1) GD doesn't lack the means to make it popular

2) It really generates VERY short urls

3) It isn't going to compete with T.co because Twitter will use it only for internal url shortening purposes.

this one generates super short URLs as well: 0.gy and is not affiliated with Godaddy (sample: 0.gy/1u)

*it's our own Url Shortener for Domaining International, feel free to use it as well

Do we really need another url-shortener?

So far the only newsworthy stand-alone .co developments have BOTH been url-shorteners. Twitter and now gd.
Is .CO going to become known as the url-shortener tld?

CO is being branded as a shorter version of .COM which, after all, is what domains are about: shortness

I found out the hard way that subdomain letters are case sensitive, so be sure to get the lower case (preferable) and upper case, if you can. For example, I got vote, Vote, and VOTE and ha, Ha, and HA. I can see why GoDaddy has done that (more URLs), but it could be confusing and not too useful.

I did get a few uppercase one-letter subdomains, but missed out on the lower case.

No error.
Compare x.co/K (DISCLAIMER: This is mine)

and x.co/k
They go to different sites

I think GoDaddy did this on purpose.

I'd so much like to see t.co and x.co used for something a little more creative than url-shorteners.
Why are url shorteners even so popular?
I understand their use on twitter (where you have a limited number of characters allowed) and maybe on mobile phones (where typing long urls with the normal keypad could be quite annoying) but where else are they useful? I hate not knowing where the link is actually going to.

@RUPERT: maybe url-shorteners aren't necessary outside of services like Twitter, but never underrate the power of short link customization you can redirect people anywhere you wish. Imagine you have a website about loans with a 20+ char url and you setup a free and permanent x.co/loans (BTW it's already taken and unfortunately it isn't mine)

Exactly.
Some extensions seem to be used for hacks mostly, others for URL shorteners mainly

The part of the URL after the domain name CAN be case-sensitive, because if reflects the file & directory structure on the server. On a Unix server it will be case-sensitive, not on a windows machine

lol, so I guess Url Shortener are a small time competition for domainers as well..

Why, well you can still own superlongandcrappynonsensedomainwith-3-misplaced-hyphens.biz but can shorten it into something short and pretty like x.co/crap which could eliminate the need of a good looking domain ..

Btw can you completely mask your landing url to x.co/crap?

What users of the .co ccTLD must remember is that it is controlled by the government of Columbia, not ICANN. Would I want to brand my company's identity in a ccTLD controlled by the government of Columbia? Probably not.

I see no down side to having a few generic x.co URLs attached to domains. If you sell a domain, its x.co URL goes with it, which COULD be a selling point, given the popularity and wide use of GD. In other words, one could take a longtail domain and create a short URL.

Whether you love, hate, or feel indifferent about GoDaddy, this is a FREE service.

There have been companies branded in TLDs other than those controlled by ICANN (.me, .tv and .fm are just three examples).

Personally I think this should be treated as yet another fad/novelty.
Even google have goo.gl, which is not widely known.

Also godaddy is in the business of selling domain, I think they are doing that pretty well.
Today Bob is pimping up .co, but not long ago he would swear by .me.
Shortly he will move on to the next TLD whatever it is, he clearly won't be the one left holding the bag. He's selling domains, he's not investing in them.
