On 1 January 2005, domaining will turn 20!

In another thread I found out the first domain name, nordu.net, was registered on 1 January 1985. In two days the domain name business will turn 20!

Let's raise a toast to celebrate 20 years of domains!

nordu.net was used for the first ever ROOT server (nic.nordu.net). It was techinically the first ever domain name, as it was created by the registry (for use by the registry) on DAY 1, before domains were allowed to be officially registered.

The first 10 domain names registered were as follows

SYMBOLICS.COM 15 Mar 85 (holds distinction for being first ever registered name)

What was email like 15 years ago? Probabally was like 1MB for $10 a month right?

I can't remember all I know I had a 14K4 modem and was able to surf the net on my Tulip XT

I remember that I paid $5,- per pre-registartion for the .info and did not get one of the pre-registered names

what do you think will be left (or will there be more?) in januari 2006?

2LD .IN and .SG coming online soon open to everyone.

The STLDs like .MOBI don't really count as they are largely restricted from the general public.

Maybe .ASIA might make it as a publicly available ZTLD by 2006.

The .In 's should be open to the "Regular" Public about 3 weeks in to the new year I read somewhere .... I think peeps with TM's etc ... will be allowed to Pre-Register before this time.
