Bing.com the new serious Google competitor

Microsoft will unveil this week the new search engine that claims to be better than Google, name is bing so I check the domain name bing.com whois and YES it's Microsoft Corp the owner.

So as you see short, memorable dot com and brandable are still premiums.

Sure that many newbies will reg all kind of bingsomething.com and try to sell on auction market place but what a waiste of time and money.

What I see is that most search engines use LLLLL.com or LLLLLL.com rarely LLLL or LLL. Why? I don't know! Also if you already read the story of Livesearch.com witch Microsoft made offer of 200k (if I remember) and owner wanted more (800k) so MSFT didn't want and now is launching Bing.com

I like "bing.com" much better than "livesearch.com", although if I had unlimited microsoft money, I'd have probably gone after something a wee bit better.

Personally, I'm betting against them being "the next google", though, unless they can offer functionality that is so amazingly good, it will draw people away. G usage has entered that golden realm of no longer being a service where one is conscious of it's use, but a thoughtless reflex where one uses it as a matter of instinct, like breathing or eating at McDonalds (<-- for a lot of people, anyway).
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/industry-news/585614-bing-com-new-serious-google-competitor.html

Any search engine will have a darn hard time supplanting G's position, as whatever evolution in functionality that might cause users to make the jump is already being tackled and implemented by G. There's a reason why "being first" counts for so much. G was the first search engine service to "get it" and they've continued "getting it" ever since.

Claim to be better than Google?

They couldn't do it with MSN/Live.com.
I wonder what's changed?

10 vs 66

MSN has about 10 per cent of the search market in the USA. The big G around 66.

Bing all you want but read the numbers.

Save a Life
Microsoft using "Bing.com" as their domain explains all their problems right there. Yahoo/MSN are good to domainers because their not as good as Google in producing highly relevant, real-time, updated search results.

Having a new name does not change anything. People will even be willing to type wolframalpha, if that can provide what they are looking for.
But I genuinely hope bing succeed.

Microsoft yawn fest! When a new search engine claims to be better than Google it is almost a sure sign that it will fail.

Checked namebio, and turns out they spent $25,375 to acquire bing.com

It's not like they couldn't afford a better name...baffles me why they went with bing

my guess is that they chose it because it's simple and easy to pronounce. "Bing it!" vs. "Google it!"

Yeah same here -- I came across one site which was making fun of the name and showed some Bing Cherries as a picture when talking about Microsoft's new search engine

I'll give them props for being one up on "Cuil", but seriously... With all the money Microsoft has and all the money even getting a few extra percent market share from Google is worth, you'd think they would have purchased a better name.

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out, although Yahoo and MSN search seem to suck (search for one thing, and get a bunch of unrelevant results).

Plus, "bing" makes for an awful verb - "Just bing it" doesn't sound as good as "Just Google it"

I guess we'll see though!

I like it.

MSN search has been performing better too.

And they've pretty much taken bing.anything now. I wonder how many unreported sales in jan - mar 2009 for these names, I see the .in was sold on 03 march 2009.

I sincerely hope they do well also. I see Google as a monster that could possible get bigger and take over the Web. At the same time, they should have spent more time thinking of a better name than bing.
