Inside Pool's New OLS - How They Plan to Counter NetSol in the Drop Game Now

You've probably heard about Pool.com's upcoming Open Listing Service (OLS) by now, but DNJournal.com takes you beyond the press release with background from Pool President Taryn Naidu (interviewed at Traffic 2004 last week) on the new plan. It is expect to roll out any day now and you'll be happy to know OLS won't be a sealed bid 2-phase auction process!

The program represents a completely new business model for Pool. After dominating the game for the past year they were forced to remodel the whole operation when Network Solutions started giving SnapNames exlcusive rights to their drops (attracting a $150 million lawsuit from Pool and others in the process). Read all about it through the link below:

Registrars Plan to Pool Their Resources in New Open Listing Service

If things continue in the current direction, one big problem for domain buyers will be that they will have to check a drop list for each individual registrar and bid at more auction venues than ever before.
Wouldn't the multiple auction locations actualy be advantageous to the bidders, at least in terms of auction end-prices? Centralized bidding will be convenient, but is sure to attract more bidders, and hence higher prices.

Probably so, but I've yet to see an auction venue that wanted a system that was advantageous to bidders. They like having the deck stacked in their favor.

When Club Drop opened and started having success with the drops I think we saw what you are talking about - there were some good deals to be had there. Should be the case at the registrars going it alone for a short time at least but eventually the pros will descend on any site that has high quality domains.

So as domainers, its better for us to support multiple bid locations? In that case, long live OpenSRS, netsol, and namewinner - may their tribe increase. And down with OLS!

Also, do you think it feasible for large resellers (like namecheap and ev1) to copy this trend, and change their terms and conditions in such a way that they can renew and take control of expired domains that they hold for their clients, instead of letting valuable names go to OLS' control? And if the large resellers can do it, then why not the little ones? Then we can have hundreds of auction venues, and reasonable auction prices once again.
