Interview with Rick Latona - Domainer Of The Year

After my interview with Rick Schwartz someone asked me to interview Rick Latona. Well, I have come through again. I have been asking Rick for months to do an interview, I must have caught him on a good day last week because he finally agreed.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/industry-news/529983-interview-with-rick-latona-domainer-year.html

Besides being the 2008 Domainer Of The Year, Rick is the LARGEST domain broker in the world and most recently has been added to the TRAFFIC auction events. In his first TRAFFIC auction which was held in Brooklyn NY only two months ago Rick’s auction brought in roughly $700,000. We will find out very soon if he can top that, next TRAFFIC event is in two weeks which will be hosted in Australia.

OK, lets see what Rick has to say about some of my questions.

Q. What is your educational background?
Read the rest here...

Interview to long to post everything so please use the link above to read.

Some highlights.

Quote:
Q. Do you spend any time in the domainer forums?
A. I stop by all of the major forums to search for my name and my company names from time to time to make sure I don’t need to defend myself. Other than that, I stay away. I think blogs and forums stunt your ability for original thought. I don’t want to find myself registering random LLLLs because I read a 20 page thread that everyone else is doing it.
Nice...funny he mentions the LLLL's.

Quote:
I can give you a clue though, they are all .com names or ccTLD names. I never touch mobi, info, biz or alternative gTLD names. ccTLD names have a lot of growth potential.

Rick's clue was .com and ccTLD......

Hand registering great names is always the most gratifying form of acquiring them.

More than half of the domains I owned I registered.

I have only bought one name, the rest of my names are all hand registered also!

I think Rick and certain other people in the industry know what to look out for in a hand reg.

I believe a good keyword domain or a geo keyword domains are the best hand reg.

Im sure we have already seen some from his newsletter but he isnt going to tell us that he paid $8 and charged you $5000 but thats business and thats how you make cash!

Regards,

Robbie

If anyone of us had the means to reg 4k names every 30 days I'm sure we would find some nuggets as well. I think his hand-regs are probably worth more right off the bat, because they're regged by him...

Yes, but we can do it on a smaller scale (25 - 100 names perhaps)

In a sense - the more networked you are in the industry - the more valuable your portfolio.

What i meant was what niche or industry type domains he is regging, he said you will see these in years to come when he sells them. you need a good eye and experience to hand reg IMO. I would not even know where to start.

No problem, you guys want Kevin Ham I will get Kevin Ham. I will have it done January 15th. I only say that long because we are in November which has a couple of events out of the country and December is holiday time. But who knows, I might be able to publish it sooner.

Tony, give Elliot five years.....he came to the game a little later from what I understand and probably started with less money than most of these guys like Frank and Rick. I'd say he's made some fast moves ..... especially if you compare him to most other domainers.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=529983

Burbank.com is better than 500 mediocre domains and I suspect he realized that early on and made the bold move to buy and develop. He has done a nice job of developing it.

I think he will make for a good interview since he's in the trenches and not sitting on the sideline with a bunch of cash making strategic purchases like most of the big players. He's fighting his way to the top. Very respectable.
