ICANN releases stategy for more new gTLD's

ICANN has announced its strategy paper for implementing more gTLD's. It is possible they could take proposals sometime in 2005 according to my quick read of the deadline being 12/31/2004 for comments.

Info is here: http://www.icann.org/topics/gtld-strategy-area.html

comments get emailed here: gtld-strategy-draft@icann.org

How many new gTLDs are they going to add? If the amount of extensions gets to be as many as the amount of area codes for telephone numbers, then no one will be able to find anything.

Hey, maybe google is behind adding TLD's so we have to use search engines to find anything!

Reading between the lines, I don't think there's a set limit. The proposals just have to prove it will be viable, they can handle the registry and processes, and...oh yeah...pony up 5 or 6 figures just to apply.

I don't think we need any more gTLD's, at least for a few more years. Let the current applicants of sTLD's get established before going forward.

That's what search engines are for, if there are new extensions people will advertise more in anyway to get their site in search engine, and eventually they pick it up.
