Cuil.com - any thoughts?

So...

Big news is Cuil.com has launched as the new super-sized search engine in town...

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=cuil&meta=

Anybody got any thoughts?

Do you think they really can compete with the big 'G'?

It didn't find my (almost) brand new website which Google does, it must be terrible!

Seriously now, the results presentation just puts me off completely. How am I suppose to know which is the most relevant? There are three columns!

The creators are ex-Google employees.

There's a reason they don't work at Google anymore. I'll stick with my traditional Google search.

Google got so popular so fast from its simplicity, this will never even come close to competing with google with all those scattered multi columned search results

Cuil.com - New search engine

Cuil is getting a lot of attention from the press. An ex-google employee starting a new search engine, which has more websites listed than google, is a good story. It will be a good story for a while and the press will keep reporting on it.

So... For those typo-lookers, this may be a good place to look. Sites like Googll.com get tens of thousands of hits daily.

I'm not in this market... I'm just suprised how many prime typos there are left. =).

It's certainly not a small startup. They have 33 million dollars in venture capital
(although this is a drop in the bucket to Google's +100 Billion dollar market value).
One of the founders, Anna Patterson, had built a search engine before this one
which was bought by Google to upgrade their search engine with the technology.
So she's obviously very capable. If this new search engine is equal to or even
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/industry-news/497598-cuil-com-any-thoughts.html
better it's going to come down to marketing, something which Google has a far
superior position in. Cuil.com does have have at least one very strong selling
point that I've seen and that's they won't keep user data. Given the recent
situation between Youtube (Google owned) and Viacom and a judge's ruling to
hand over user's data (the 2 parties did agree only after that the data would be
made anonymous) some people might appreciate this aspect of the new search
engine. Of course all the data Google collects is also one of it's strengths since
this allows them to do more targeted marketing.
I find it interesting that although Wikipedia rules in PageRank on Google, you
can search for most anything - name of a band, car brand, tv show, etc. and it will
rank in the top 3 of results - you generally won't see this on Cuil. Clearly
Wikipedia gets lots of traffic and is usually very relevant information. I wonder
what it is about Cuil's methods of indexing that gives Wikipedia a poor showing?
Any ideas on this?

Actually - They weren't "just" google employees - One of them was a main Engineer that google has been buying technology(inventions) from for some time.

Nice to see some competition IMO ~

This is a heck of a lot more than just a few engineers starting up their own Google (or attempting to, anyway). Monier is involved in the project, the name might not ring a bell, but he worked with the likes of Altavista when it was the Google of its era. Arguably, some of Monier's innovations later led to Google. There are other names in there, just as bright.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=497598

Search engines are constantly involving and there are some very bright minds behind Cuil, just as there are at Google. Google has already started to show some signs of problems, though as with anything these can be worked out. I think the time is ripe if the competitor brings something new to the table.

Microsoft and Yahoo don't get it - so it's not like Google has simply been dominating the excellent competition out there. Google is indeed a juggernaut, and I don't want my last statement to take away from that or try and diminish them, but even a company Google could go down the drain with the innovations that are out there. Google has built a monopoly, but fortunately no company can ever really get a monopoly on ideas in this market.

Only time will tell if these folks succeed, but this is not just another search engine copy. I, for one, welcome the competition.

If you click "Webmaster Info" you can submit your website at the bottom. I don't think they've full on let it index quite yet.

I don't so much mind cuil as a name, it's only four letters and will be memorable. Google, though hard to imagine, is a typo itself.

I just send a letter to CUIL.com team, I questioned their pick Cuil.com with 33 Million Dollar Budget! I just provided them with my feedback. A positive approach. and also gave them options to what is brandable VS cuil

Cuil just doesn't sell it, it will fail on TV and Radio... and I know this, cause i work in entertainment... the EAR and EYE are very picky....

I agree, what an absolutely horrible choice for a domain for a 33 million dollar startup.

Surely they could have found something better in Kevin, Adam or Rick's portfolio, heck I think half of us NPers could have sold them a better name than this.
