No sympathy from me. 1) A newspaper is a business that makes money from bad news -- a plane crash with many killed we're put ads next to it, 2) They delibrately pushed up the costs of operating a newspaper to make it very hard for new entrants to their industry, 3) the cost of advertising for a small business is ruinous because you've paying the same rates as big established businesses, 4) if you don't pay their high advertising charges the public don't trust you because you are not a well-known brand -- this again limits new entrants to the world of business, 5) try selling a story to a newspaper they will pay an outsider a pitance because they have their own unionised journalists, 6) try getting a job as a journalist you will not even get an interview unless you went to one of the top universities, 7) they distort the democratic process because some people's opinions carry far more weight than the majority and they convey and/or back those opinions, 8) any time you have first hand experience of a story in the newspaper you are surprised at the facts being report differently from your own experience. These points are for starters. Goodbye to a morally corrupt industry, long live the internet.
I've both worked for newspapers (in various capacities), and negotiated with them in the sale of a business ... and I can tell you firsthand, these above points are right on target! Dinosaurs!
