Thumbs down NSI offering 100 year renewals

Want a real laugh?

NSI is now offering 100 year renewals. Since ICANN contracts only allow the registries to accept 10 year registrations, this means NSI sits on 90+ years of registration to earn interest on your money. If you are unhappy with NSI, you are stuck with them for the next century or lose your money since prepayment doesn't transfer to another registrar. Sounds more like a criminal sentencing to me than a service.

????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/industry-news/24404-nsi-offering-100-year-renewals.html

Here's the text from their site:
Quote:

PROTECT YOUR DOMAIN NAME REGISTRATION INTO THE NEXT CENTURY.
Every day, companies lose their domain names by accident because they failed to renew. Protect your valuable online identity for 100 years and rest assured that it will be automatically renewed into the next century.

No worries or renewal notices for 100 years.
When you purchase the 100 Year Domain Service, Network Solutions will automatically ensure that your domain name remains registered to you for the next 100 years.

Exclusively from Network Solutions.
The 100 Year Domain Service is another way that we are making it easier to manage and maintain your domain names.

Our Best Price.
Lock in your domain registration for our lowest price available - just $9.99 a year. This is a savings of over 70% compared to paying annually.

How does the 100 Year Domain Service work?
Network Solutions will register your domain name for the maximum term available at the underlying domain registry and then, as long as your domain is registered with Network Solutions, we’ll add additional years to that registration on an annual basis, ensuring that your registration is always renewed until it has been registered to you for a total of 100 years of registration service from the date of your purchase.

What if I transfer my domain name to another registrar?
It is important to note that your pre-paid 100 Year Domain Service is provided exclusively by Network Solutions for you, and will terminate upon any transfer of your domain name to another registrar, with no refunds. The number of registration years that transfer to a new registrar will be the current term of the registration at the time of transfer, as reflected in WHOIS.

How can I confirm how many years I have remaining on my 100 Year Domain Service?
Network Solutions online Account Manager will always display the expiration date of your 100 Year Domain Service.

Who is the 100 Year Domain Service for?
Network Solutions' 100 Year Domain Service is perfect for individuals or businesses that place a high value on keeping their domain registration indefinitely, and don’t want to worry about losing their registration because they didn’t open a renewal notice or have their credit card information up-to-date.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=24404
So, if you worry about letting a name expire because you missed the notice, what are the odd's you (or your heirs or company) will miss the notice when they haven't had a renewal notice in 100 years.

Anyone want to buy a WLS on one of these names?

This sounds like a terrible idea. Besides the obvious flaws, there's the fact that the price of domain registrations will likely decrease to less than $10 by the next century!

I wouldn't say that's a fact. Considering 100 years worth of inflation and possible new taxes imposed on domain name registration... who knows what the costs will be.... maybe $1000/yr!
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=24404

I do agree with you, the idea is wacky!

security is an unknown quantity at this point

With the way technology is changing, and the internet developing at the rate it is, who knows if we'll even have domain names in 100 years! :-)

Going by this theory, I almost always register my domains year by year, because if the price falls (which it has been over the past many years) I won't be stuck paying todays rates 10 years from now. I know, I know, inflation....but still.

With the way technology is changing, who knows if we'll even have the Internet anymore? By then we might have graduated to a better system called Internet 2.0 or something... The point is that the 100 year "deal" is neither certain nor a deal.

I think this is the best response to their offer:

For those with a serious worry on domain durations, one OpenSRS reseller has been quick to respond to the Network Solutions’ challenge. The reseller claims that it will be happy to renew customers’ domain names for one billion years for a one-time charge of $100 million, a whopping $9.89 less per year than its competitor.

When you think about it logically that would kind of suck cause then no one would really get a hold of that domain, not even for as long as they live. Unless they do live up to be that age.

Not at NSI, It isn't less than $10. I think they still charge $25 or so.

Well, if you really think about it, how likely is it you will get any premium domain names like sex.com and internet.com and com.com anyway?

The 100 year domain - Legal or not?

Questions if the 100 year renewals violate Verisign's ICANN agreement and the viability of such an offer.

I think Verisign got around that rule when they divested NSI as a separate company. NIS, not verisign is offering the 100 year registrations.

They probably have common stockholder owners, but are legally totally separate corporate entities now.

The rest of the points are valid though.

Verisign just needs to stop with there antics, I see a not so becoming trend with them... they come up with some BS promo- when they get sued they come up with a new one...

I wonder how many domains Netsol has registered for real people and not themselves?
