History is made

Yesterday, one of the biggest events in the history of the Internet took place; non-Latin top-level domains went live in the DNS root zone. In plain English, you can now type the whole of a domain name in Arabic script. Not just the left of the dot (as in dot org) but the right of it, too. The three new top-level domains are السعودية. (“Al-Saudiah”), امارات. ( “Emarat”) and مصر. (“Misr”). They are country code names in Arabic for Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Egypt.

There is more on other IDN forums- thanks to 555 for the above info.

I guess I just see others registering names in what they thought was english when infact, it's not so or not terms we use here and .... as I do not speak any other language fluent enough to embark on that route, I would be even wiser to stay away from Idns

But it is a boat that I will at as it sails past as I know those on board .. are gonna have a hellava ride

Myself and the majority of those that are in to IDN do not speak/read the languages that we own and knew nothing when we ventured in to them. A lot of work and mistakes in the learning curve but most got there. Some of the early birds have portfolios that will blow the socks off the big ascii domainers and they will be going on show in the not too distant future- an interesting ride in the next year or two no doubt.

you must be confused if you dont understand that the internet is changing to a way that each and every country will be able to have own their language and extension, the internet has taken 25 years to get to this point

consider that english is not every one's first language

I still dont understand how this is a moment in history for the internet. What advantages will this bring to the common English internet user?

Oh right because I was interested by the biggest event is history content, thought it was going to be the whole of the internet not just IDN, normally something which has the title biggest event in history effects the whole world. Good luck with your IDN though.

the op wrote one of the biggest internet events, not the biggest , in internet terms he is correct

http://www.nsxa.com.au/ftp/news/021719735.PDF is a link to just one idn sale , Pair of Six-Figure .DE Domains - Including the Largest IDN Sale Ever Reported Leads This Week's Abbreviated Sales List is another example , and last but not least Biggest Unreported IDN Sale: Headlined by игры.com (Games).com
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=657803

feel free to read and learn how the internet is changing , the choice is easy keep your head in the sand or find some opportunities while they are still there

You really don"t get it do you? Of course it affects the whole of the internet and the world-not just your little corner, millions of people will be able to access the internet in their own language. China alone has more speakers of a language other than English, then add Spanish Russian etc.

The Arabic script and idn extensions referred to in the opening thread is simply the first to go live with many countries to follow. A genuine first step in a major world event.

What ive been trying to point out, is that really this isn't a massive event in internet history, its a big event for those who will use it but not a massive event in internet history.

Well, it clearly shows that the majority of people is affected by this. So it is rather irrelevant whether or not English speakers are affected. That was your whole point, wasn't it?
