Imagine yourself as someone that does not speak english but wants to reg english words, where to start.... Thats a hard question to answer...
Resist the temptation to reg names like shöes.com - nobody will ever buy them from you, and they will never get any traffic. Save the money and buy yourself a 12 pack of beer instead.

If you are completely new... knowledge is going to save you some good money. I would spend a week researching before spending. I made lots of mistakes with some early Chinese domains.
