making a curve in image and transparent blended layers

Hello everyone:
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/graphic-design-flash/15291-making-curve-image-transparent-blended-layers.html

Although I have been designing my own web site designs for years, I am relatively new to the concepts of designing web graphics images from stock photography and images.

I am trying to design a header graphic and navigation bar based on the following image:

http://www.128concepts.com/CM/images/test2.jpg

I am using Photoshop 7 and Macromedia Freehand 10 to try and emulate this graphic.

Now here is the fun part (I’ve been scratching my head for days to try to figure out how to do this), I know that I need to apply several layers to make up the composition of the final graphic, but that is as much as I know. How do I do it?

1: I have a stock image that I am using and am trying to figure out how to apply a curve to the bottom that is similar to the image in the link – using Freehand to do this.

2: How did they make the blended curve at the bottom of the image (the part where the solid, transparent coloured curve meets with the main image)?

3: How on earth did they make the transparent nav bar that is blended in with the main image?

4: Imagine that the image is a header image at the top of a web page. I want to make a nav bar that is to the left of the page that follows the curve of the image. This is going to be tricky in my opinion, as I will need to try to base the nav bar image that I will make to follow the curve.

5: Is there any way of saving anchor points as a template of some sort in Photoshop or Freehand, so I can re-use the template of the curve to make the nav bar flow with the curve of the header graphic?

I apologise if I am asking too much, but I really need advice from the experts. It’s going to be fun trying to get this to work, if I can pull it off.

Thank you to anyone who can help me with pointers in getting this problem solved. I don’t want to scratch my head and pull my hair out anymore. It’s driving me nuts )

OK i think that the way to do this is to use css to make the top image transparent. At work at the moment so I will explain more later.

Thanks for replying:

I know it is a lot to ask for and I will try to create the graphic myself by researching the net for tutorials and self-trial.

I just need advice on the more trickier aspects, such as the curve and if there is a method to emulate the curve to the same dimensions when I try to make the navigation bar to go with it.

I am trying to learn and would wish to do this the right way.

Many thanks in advance.
