I started developing the script about 3 years ago. It started out as something that I used for my own sites and customers, but early this year I decided that it was good enough to go open source. The response so far has been wonderful, and there hundreds if not thousands of installations of this script running right now.

We have an active support forum where people are able to get help, discuss features, request mods, or release mods. The forum gets posts everyday, and it has been wonderful the way people have worked together to help.

We are currently on the 2.0 Version of the script. One of the big goals for 2.0 was to make it easy to customize the features and design. There many features that can be turned on and off including mod_rewrite, show pagerank of links, require reciprocal link, use sponsored links (paid thru paypal), RSS Feeds of categories and search results, and many others. With regard to design, we are now using the Smarty template system in version 2.0, which is probably the most widely used templating system available, meaning there are lots of programmers and designers that are familiar with Smarty, so that it is easy to get help.

One of the features that is fairly unique for PHP Link Directory and separated it from the rest of the pack early is the "Link Campaign" email system that is built. It allows the admin to setup an email template so that custom emails can be easily sent to other webmasters to request link exchanges. It is as simple as entering 3 fields (title, url and email of webmaster), and clicking submit. Once this is done, an email is sent requesting a link exchange. It is designed to be fast an easy, so that an employee or site owner can send many emails in a short period of time. Of course, it is recommended to do good research before sending emails, so that you are not bugging people that would not be interested in receiving your email.

We have continued to grow and improve. The most recent additions are the Editors Module, Symbolic Link Module, and Add Link First Email Module.

The Editor's Module allows the admin to grant limited access to only certain categories, so that unique editors can be assigned, making management of larger directories easier.

The Symbolic Link Module allows linking to another category from within the current category. For example, maybe within the Recreation/Baseball you want to add a symbolic link to Shopping/Sports/Baseball. This is a feature that is used on DMOZ, and I'm glad we have been able to add it to our script too.

The Add Link First Email Module is an expansion of the original link campaign module, which allows you to automate the process of emailing webmasters for link exchanges when you prefer to link to them first. Often better results occur when you say "I've already linked to you, so now can you link to me?" instead of "Let's exchange links. Tell me when you add a link, and I'll do likewise".
