I look at a lot of names, I see names that were available at NameJet and got no bid at $69, no backorder at Name for $49.99 and sometimes names at Go Daddy that would cost $24.99 and $5 closeout. These names are then regged for $10.99 at Name or $12.99 at Dynadot.

I tend to think that no one is regging a name they think has value and selling it for $100. So if you believe a name has value and you are not a Dynadot API drop catcher, jump the drop catcher and pay $49.99. Of course this is just my opinion and not a fact. Of course the main premise behind this is that if you are not a drop catcher you are not going to get the name for $10.99 I am not saying to spend $49.99 for names that will have no interest to anyone but you.

I did this with Nikita.tv which got a $300 offer yesterday. I knew this name would be a target of those Dynadot Dropcatchers, it would not be available at 4 am to register quick.

I ran this scenario by Rick Schwartz in an email to see if he agreed with the premise, He did agree, if he did not that would not have changed my opinion but its nice to get the opinion of one of the top domainers on the planet.

So what is your opinion if its not worth $49.99 or $29.99 why is it worth $10.99

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
If you are willing to sell a domain for under $200 and if you can acquire it for multiple years (3-5) at a $10.99 renewal, then perhaps it is worth the risk. On the other hand a $50 or $69 acquisition plus $25-$35 annual renewals will yield a $100+ cost quickly. Given that only x% of a portfolio will sell and that .TVs don't generally yield parking revenue, a higher sales price is necessary if costs are higher. Yes, names can be marketed for faster turnover but time has a value and you can easily invest hundreds of dollars of your time marketing a domain and yield no sale. I would have never imagined selling a Spanish .TV to a Chinese investor or that a Spanish .TV music domain would be acquired by a Brailian .TV investor because it has a different meaning in Portuguese. A fair percentage of my .TV sales high $XXX to low $xxxx end up in investors' hands but if my initial acquisition cost was under $75 I won't complain. My .TVs are selling at higher prices than my .COM domains but I still don't view significant .TV adoption where there are frequent inquires and solid offers on decent names.

Isnt it obvious , strange question i must say , in business u should keep your bottom line as low as possible , you cant be sure 100% that the domain will sell unless you have a buyer already , not to mention that there is thousands of domains dropping daily so why i pay 50 for that one , when i can pay 50$ for 5 domains , unless i have a buyer as i said then i will pay not only 50 but much more ...

No its not obvious thought I pointed out only for names you believe have value.

To Leonard's point that are not too many selling their .tv domains for $200. If you look at most domainers asking prices they are much higher. As in the example it was worth paying $49.99 for Nikita.tv because I would not have gotten it for $10.99.

Seems like an obvious answer to me but the question does crop up occasionally. If you backorder a name then you have much higher chance of getting it - getting a name that costs potentially 4.5x what you needed to pay and presenting you with a renewal fee annually in the $30 range. IMO its only worth doing this on a)the very best names and b) names you know will be competed by other catchers and that you want very much for other reasons than resale.
No I'd much rather take what I can for $11 and on the best ones take advantage of the pricing promo allowing additional years at $11 if paid upfront and registration. Putting these names out to 2016+ for the same price as a backorder means one can relax a bit with selling it, you have time to develop, and you dont have to worry next year about renewals.
I think it takes some skill (and nerves) calling it right, whether to backorder or go for the drop, so far Im not doing to bad.
Its true that if Ray had not backordered the Nikita.tv name that morning then I would probably have caught it -you called it right so good one there and congrats on your sale if you choose to take it :D

Right Lin your examples are what I am talking about both a) and b) not for a regular name. There are plenty of names that I don't know if you and your little canon are going for, I think if I get it for $11 I get it, if not no big deal. Nikita was one I wanted, I should have done that with Prix.tv and Roxy.tv which you got. Those two were the basis for this whole post. I am glad you got them because you are one of good people in the space.

"that little cannon" - ah you must mean my terrifyingly awesome evil domain cannon of doom :D
Yeah those 2 names are good examples rly. They *ARE* worth backordering but I called it right and went for the catch and now got those gems regged out years for the same price. Someone else could have bo'd them and denied the aforementioned cannon a hit but that would have been no biggy really, another day another drop.

Another day, another drop yes, names as good as those dropping every day ? No. I think you will sell Prix.tv for big money Lin.
