I dont see why not.

Netflix is already streaming on millions of computers now, This is the next step.

Makes sense actually.
I would much rather pick and choose who I pay for their content rather than pay $100 a month to one Corporate Monopoly for tons of crap I could care less about.

I hope others follow suit.

Watch out cable! They did it

"It is thought Netflix shelled out somewhere in the vicinity of $100 million USD to acquire House of Cards, beating out offers from established original programming heavyweights HBO and AMC in the process."

Netflix is going to lose its distribution rights to major movie production houses' "private cloud". Exclusive content is a kind of desperation move, imho. Who knows what's going to happen in 5 years. They've been ruled down and out every year ... Trying to move from distribution to content is not a minor change.

Why is this worse than spending $100 a month to five different corporate exclusive licence holders?

The movie industry is set to setup their own service whereby movies will be accessible from their cloud (my understanding). I don't know if the plan is to bypass Netflix (or just make exclusive licensing more competitive to their advantage); however, I believe that it is a step towards them having far more control of their distribution revenue.

I put this together from about 3-4 different sources that I've read. I'm rather obsessed with the impact that private clouds/hybrid clouds is going to have.

I think Netflix moving to content ownership is a logical step for them. I wouldn't write them off... a lot of people lost a lot of money short selling netflix
