Those guys at Rok never give up,do they? Now the firm has launched Rok TV UK (Rok.TV) as free download to UK viewers, although it is still in beta version.

ROK TV uses the company’s purpose-built media player to allow moving video to play on virtually any mobile phone’s screen. The important point is that it works on a regular 2.5G (GPRS) signal – not just 3G or Wi-fi.

The catch is that you have to download Rok’s own software rather than using the handset’s own browser or built-in media player. You can download it for free here.

The list of available channels is quite impressive since it includes BBC One, BBC Two, and E4, as well as ROK Tube. The advantage is that it is not dependant on any particular mobile operator.

This means that you can be on T-Mobile, O2, Vodafone, and Orange and still receive a television signal. Which must be something of a first.

The company is promising thatm ore free-to-air channels will be added in the near future.

Given that many consumers now possess a unlimited data download tariff, you no longer need Wi-fi in order to watch TV for free on your mobile phone.

As the company’s marketing director, Bruce Renny, says. “We believe Rok TV - free streamed Mobile TV, comprising BBC TV channels - is a first in the UK.”
A US version of Rok TV in the US (with relevant TV channels) in the next planned to launch in the next few weeks.
