Sneaky Tactics to grab YOUR TV names

Nearly fell for the old....

'I'm just a poor 'blah blah' from 'somewhere poor' and we really need the name that you own as it will get us the attention we need, etc etc

Was about to throw back a cheap $XXX and then discovered the name is a soon to be launched TV channel in a far away country.

The whole thing was a VERY well organised and elaborate plan from a very tricky domainer.

TWO THINGs

First - This suggests that some people will go to any length to get a .TV name - this is not good but does suggest that .TV names patently have some value.

Second - I feel just a little less good toward my fellow man after this rather nasty lie. I sold a similar name a year ago for a very low amount because I felt it really was a good cause - and it proved to be true. Now I will just think people are scum from the outset and be on a total defensive - which is not a nice thing.

What other scummy tricks should we look out for that try and relive us of our TV names?

Well it not the only sneaky tactic. People go and trash sometime while they are secretly buying the thing they trash. I believe that happens with DOT TV.

I believe this is done in all extensions not just .tv, I think if you have a highly valued name unless it was for a real charity, then you price the name how you would to anyone else, but tell the person with not much money, "You are in luck, picking domains is what I do, I will help you find a reasonably suitable name available for registration, because if you are down on your luck, just looking for something then you do not need the top premium name in the genre, no sir, you will work hard and build this alternative name to the top, because you are hungry and have that strong desire for success." If they not interested in your help then they were conning you. Bottom line if someone just needs a domain because they got a great idea and the world will love, great ideas happen without a great domain, so if they only wanted the great domain, then IMO it was a con job for the great domain. Again IMO

It is easy to find scores of companies with so-so domains so this logic help poor me with your great domain is flawed. All you have to do is add an iWord, eWord, myWord, theWord, greatWord or something of the nature if you just need a domain for your site. Or go for .us, .biz, .org etc

What is the domain name ... and who is the well organized "tricky domainer"?

Can you please substantiate this claim (they said the same thing about the ".mobi", and it turns out that it was just a lousy extension / investment) ... who is doing this, specifically?

Regards,
-Jeff

This type of behavior does not surprise me and Ray is right, it happens all over the internet in all extensions. In the past few years that I have been doing .tv part time, I can honestly say I wasted about 300-400 hours alone of personal time involving wild goose chases and half ass people. I have also wasted probably close to a couple grand in money.

When I launched Portlandmaine.TV one guy actually kept emailing asking me for all types of private information but when I repeatedly asked for his name and company info he would not give me any info. Well that person ended up being a member right here on this forum.

Ive made some mistakes but have also made some great gains through all this and I chalk it up as a learning experience write off, and the side effect of being part of a new emerging market; that is the internet and multi media on the net via .tv.

Not that many people really know what they are talking about and you need to be careful.

I really wish I could have met some of the people here in person, Ray tried to get a .tv event going at one point but timing right.

Not sure if that global.tv is gonna happen again but who knows...

Sorry your time was wasted Jimbo, that is one thing that is more valuable than .tv, time...
