.TV at regisration price

Hello,

I am new to .tv domain name, so I am confused about it.

When I purchase a .tv at registration price, does the price go up after a certain period? Like the registrar decide to put it as premium domain name, and make me pay hundred or thousand for renewal.

Just so long as you own it NO, here is more info for you,

The new registrant's guide to .tv
If you are new to .tv, there are some nuances you should know about before registering a .tv domain.

First off .tv is officially the Country Code for the Island of Tuvalu. A tiny island in the pacific.

Through a series of transactions over the years .tv is run by Verisign corp. They paid $45 million in 2002 for the Dot TV corporation and have been running the registry since 2002. The extension has been marketed as TV, a global extension favorable to multimedia and video centric names. There are no residency restrictions on .tv. Anyone can register a .tv domain.

The .tv extension has more than one pricing level, these names known as premiums can range anywhere from $100 to $500,000 a year to maintain the registration.

You can go to http://www.enomcentral.com/domains/tv_names_browse.asp to see the full list.

The first thing you will notice is that there are names on the list that are not "Premium" They have made the list from a myriad reasons ranging from: typo, a former site that dropped, a bad filtering system that was computer generated to pick a worthwhile name.

Areas of interest such as LLL or Three Letter .tv go for $500 for the most part. There is the $1000 LLL.tv thrown in here and there. LL.tv or two letter .tv range from $1000 to $30,000 (RE.tv) There is no logical reason why RE.tv is $30,000 per year and another random LL.tv is $1000. IF your company initials are QX then you do not care that RE is more popular as far as acronyms or Western useage. QX is what you need and you could get it for $1000 per year registration.

You can find .tv domains available for sale on the secondary market at places like SEDO and Afternic the same as .com or any other extension.

You may want to know if a domain already registered is a premium domain. This is important because you may see a domain for sale you think is cheap that has a $3000 renewal fee. You can go to www.ahead.tv and use their tool to find out what the renewal is. This is important and you should always research premium domains on Ahead.tv.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/dot-tv/511146-tv-at-regisration-price.html

If you are looking for discussion on .tv, you can go to www.namepros.com/dot-tv/ This forum is the largest forum focused on just the .tv extension.

Now if you need to register a domain that is not "premium" there are many choices. Godaddy.com,Enom.tv,Moniker.com to name a few place to register a .tv domain. Prices will range anywhere from $19.99 ( Special at Godaddy with a $39.99 renewal) $24.99 at Enom.tv to $39.99 all over the internet. Its important to point out premium domains can only be registered at ENOM.

A .tv domain can be used for any topic but seems to fit certain areas best. These include adult, entertainment, Geo centric sites suchs as Montreal.tv, product names, and how to sites.

So make sure you get familiar with: Ahead.tv, Enom for premium list, Namepros for discussion and Sedo and Afternic for secondary market .tv.

Let's say I purchase a new .tv at godaddy at $19.99, and $39.99 thereafter for renewal. Will that domain name ever become "premium" or anything that will cause the domain name to have hundred or thousand $$ renewal fee.

I don't want to develop a domain name, and later the registrar decide to make ridiculus renewal fee.

NO, not so long as registration is current and especially if it at Godaddy they do not hold premium .tv.

Unless you register the domain for several years in advance, the renewal price can increase at the renewal anniversary. After the Verisign contract expires, renewals could potentially become hundreds of dollars.

I would suggest registering the domain for the maximum term allowed if you have serious development plans.

The renewal price can increase for .com, .net, and so on as well unless you register the domain for several years in advanced.

Standard reg .TV's renewal will not turn into a premium unless you let it expire...
Even then, I can't recall an expired standard reg name becoming a premium unless it was super premium name and DM notices it.

I believe that gTLds can increase a maximum of 7% per year. There is no limit on ccTLD increases. For example, .SC just increased from $45 to over $100 per year.

I really like this extension second to .com and If that happens there would be lots of drops in the future.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=511146

It's kinda like changing the rule in the middle of the game.

Can you imagine a renewal from $24.99 to few hundred bucks? That would be a major turn off.

I guess I better re-think about this extension.

I love this extension but not for hundreds of dollars renewal.

Xman Verisign is not jacking the price up for non premium domains to a hundred a year. Actually over the last few years .tv has come down. Before Idotz was the cheapest at $29 with most registrars at $34 to $50

Thanks for that info equity.

I've been renewing all my Geos .TV and been finding some gems in this extension and so far this extension had been good to me and the ROI are great and that is why I really got into this beautiful extension.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=511146

This is one of the most promising extension I have ever seen. I have these what I called focus groups in most of the social networking sites and the responds I get were amazing when I talked about this extension. These social groups that I'm talking about are not domainers. They are heavily net users online who spends tons of time watching videos and online shoppers.

If MicroGuy is right and when Verisign's contract expires then they raise the price for few hundred dollars this would be a major turn of for the end users.

I certainly hope that whomever take over after Verisign they better think twice before they jack the price or else .TV will only be pass around among domainers.

Verisign owns the .tv corp and runs the .tv registry. NO one including the country actually owns the CCTLD.

XMAN it is some people here who have a wet dream about Verisign not running the registry after 2016. There is nothing to say Verisign will still not be running it. Anyone saying there has been talk about someone else running the registry is in one word a LIAR. Nothing, nowhere states what will happen in 2016.

CCTLD ownership

As stated above, no country "owns" a ccTLD or has the right to order ICANN or the Department of Commerce to change the manner in which the ccTLD is operated.

You must have missed the news about how Tuvalu is pissed. They have publicly stated they are unhappy with their contract and have threatened legal action. I think it's safe to say they are looking at other alternatives. IMHO.

No I actually blogged about that Greg months ago, TUVALU wants more money absolutely, they read Video is hot and they do not get a bonus unless .tv is over $20 Million.

Tuvalu misses out on full benefits of its internet domain name, says honorary envoy

Posted at 03:33 on 27 September, 2007 UTC

The main representative of Tuvalu in Europe says the Tuvaluans are not seeing enough of the benefits from their internet domain name dot TV.

Tuvalu’s honorary consul to Britain, Dr Iftikhar Ayaz, says the country hasn’t got the deal he says it deserves.

Verisign’s multi-million dollar agreement with Tuvalu gives the country a share of profits, and sales of dot TV addresses have risen because of the popularity of internet video.

Dr Ayaz suggests Tuvalu should drive a harder bargain:

“When you know that a country needs economic development, they should be treated fairly and they should be paid a good price. And I think at the moment dot TV is not fetching as much as it deserves.”
