Whats reported and whats what?

What if the sale of a Premium name has many years of registration built into the sale price - how is it then reported? DNJournal would just report the verified end sale price, yet that does not reflect the value of the name.

In April michaeldotcom started what turned out to be a very good thread:

http://www.namepros.com/dot-tv/46411...-tv-sales.html

In summary, the theme of the thread began by pointing out that not all sales are reported in DNJournal and then evolved from there. Duke (Ron Jackson from DNJournal) posted a number of times, and the lack of reporting of premium prices was introduced by poodleman and a healthy exchange of comments then occurred.

In one of his posts in that thread, Duke wrote:

Quote:
But that is really a moot point anyhow, because registration fees are not part of the information we track. Our report is limited to what a buyer pays the seller for a domain name, period. In the case of .tv, the buyer may or may not have to pay the registry a higher than normal fee (that is between them and the registry.) The other party to the transaction, the seller, does not get any of the registration fee, whatever it might be - so the price reported is the price the buyer received for selling the domain name - that is the only metric we have tracked from day one (and I don't think there is anything "misleading" about that metric) .
Now suppose a $10k a year Premium that is paid up for a full 5 years (thats $50k of reg fees up front) sells on Sedo for $65k. It will be reported factually as a $65k sale in DNJournal and elsewhere upon completion of the transaction, but this, although correct, is misleading IMO - there is $50k of reg fees loaded into the price.

DIY.TV is a $1k per annum Premium paid until 2013 and is currently at Auction at Sedo. It will be interesting.

Simply reporting the price is the most accurate way of reporting it I would say, what it sells for is what the name is worth, the paid up renewal years is one of the characteristics of the name even though this will devalue over time. I'd compare the situation to the reporting of link names. When looking at the sale of .tv premiums domains can then consider the reg fees paid to work out if it was actually a good investment or not.
