When you say dark backgrounds, are you talking about the background in video production, or the site (website) backgrounds?

I am pretty sure we can help you out answering this question if you clarify just what background you are talking about.

Breast Cancer
I think it may be a contrast issue which allows the users to better focus on the video(s) via a darker background versus a lighter one.

the background of the site itself. i thought it might be for contrast reasons but didnt know if there was like a real scientific reason for it to make the video better or something.

I think it is both answers. Both the web site and the video itself. For contrast reasons alone, it is easier to see someone's skin toned face if the surrounding area is dark.

Personally, I also think a darker background website tends to contrast nicely with light videos, or light text. Although Microsoft Word and youtube tend to stick to white background, dark objects method.

It really does depend on what you are doing.

If you have a website dedicated to evil, then a dark background is almost a necessity. While on the other hand, if you were shooting at the beach, then a dark background would look pretty weird.

Hey there

Depth of feel is one big reason. In design, if you have a the dark background you can "layer" your site to make it look better in most opinions.

It might be noted though, YouTube has a while background. You see that the videos seem to sit on the white background while other site designs get more complex and create the depth of feel by layering.

Hope this helps,

Gunnar

By the same token, if you were marketing red lipstick, what better to put it on then super white actress Tilda Swinton.......it really just depends on what you are doing.

It also depends on the "chrome" (video player skin). I agree Dottie that YouTube does fall flat but they do not have any chrome around their videos (apart from bottom panel) so all videos are noticed against the white background (excluding blizzards I guess).

If you have a backgound color you would need some sort of framing around the video, otherwise certain videos would merge with similar background colors.
