How Would *You* Designate Premiums?

Somewhat conceptual question for the group:

[warning: this exercise assumes a world where premiums exist. just saying "no premiums - i don't like them" is not a useful response to this thread]

We have often smiled at what was designated premium vs. what was not and said, ha, how could they be so silly to do it that way.

I was thinking about this the other day and asking myself how I would go about designating premiums and pricing them if I were starting with a blank slate and the conclusion I came away with is that it is not as easy as it looks.

Take geographics. So the obvious ones are and should be premiums. But how far do you, go? Should naperville, illinois be a premium? how about port harcourt? how about capri?

Then you have dictionary words. how do you do that at scale and get the tense right?

etc etc.

Recognizing that this is a purely theoretical exercise at this stage with .tv with most decent names being either premiums or non premium regged by now, I would love to see how you would think about it if you were King of the World.

Making one a premium while another is not is roughly the same as segregation. So on whose authority is Peoria.tv a premium, while Springfield.tv is not? What basis is used. Crime rates, population, average wages?

In my opinion, asking premium prices is asking for trouble. Verisign and Demand have proven this remarkably well with an entire industry that basically won't touch their product. Let the market decide what is premium, and just provide a secure, reliable service to keep selling names.

I never had a problem with premiums before demand came along because the prices weren't stupid and confusing. You knew what you were getting, what the renewel would be, and you knew that you can get the same price at many places.

petertdavis is an unknown quantity at this point
And, how much do you think "Premium Domains" should be worth? IMO, if it's not five figures, it's not really "Premium".

i wish that is they were gonna do this ridiculous greed pricing, that it would at least be JUST for the sale- and take on reg renewal fees after that- just like any other name sold in aftermarket-

hello folks, nobody is answering the question I asked, so let me try it another way.

Forget about "premiums", how would you determine in a blank slate way, which are the most valuable .tv names.

There is no way to do this, it is personal for everyone.

Some will say it is keywords only. Like BankDraft.tv is a huge keyword. So some domainers will think that is a pot of gold. I personally would think it is only reg fee because at this point developing that would be too much bother. The only video you could do would be "This is how you write a check".

My opinion would be that banking.tv would be the worthwhile one. BankDraft.tv is not. But BankDraft.com would go for huge money.

In closing, I believe strongly that a tv has to have a very clear dev path with video or else it may as well be a dot com.

The keyword keyword keyword thing to me (IN MY OPINION) is not the only path. You can even, again, in my opinion, pick two and three word .tv's and develop them easily and create value. It does not have to be single keywords only.

Let's say I buy BuyMyCar.tv. Now that is a three word no-no to a lot of folks around here. But to me it could be dev'd very easily into a site for people to sell their cars with a video of all around the car, the car driving, grandma driving it carefully, etc etc.

How to value a tv? No single person can tell you that. It is all about dev potential right now. There just isn't a strong enough, or any, market right now to be able to easily value a name by name alone. Just not enough sales. If we could value it that way right now, we would all be a lot richer and not having this conversation.

I am done rambling.
