Before everyone flies off the handle and tells me this is a horrible buy,let me say this is the only name I would buy that starts with "cityof" and here is why.
3. There are many sites and search terms for "city of new york" CUNY stands for City University of New York...
4. I'm willing to pay $25 for a name that always needs differentiating between the "city" and "state" This is the biggest city in the US and while "CityofNewYork" isn't the most ideal NYC name, it is official and isn't redundant. it can work for someone trying to build a portal site.
Do I think this is an amazing buy, NO, but with every other major TLD for "City of New York" taken, I think its a worthwhile one. Would I buy any other city in the USA cityofxxxxx NO
Might be one of the weakest arguments I've seen in a while, especially coming from you SKG.
The fact that the official legal name of the city is "The City of New York" would mean that if anyone trying to use "Boston.tv" would be misleading people. There are no legal grounds to your wild assertion in the real world.
If someone with the proper disclosure made cityofnewyork.tv and it was legally stopped, that in effect by precedence, would allow every other city geo to take back there names.
I don't see anything wrong with it. I had noticed a while ago that these kind of .tv names were available and was a bit suprised with all the talk of geo's
cityofchicago.tv
chicagocity.tv
In europe we refer to/call places cities
Dublin City
Paris City
London City
Maybe it's just a european thing but I would think chicagocity.tv was a pretty good name but what do I know!
Sorry if you feel this is one of the weakest arguments you have seen.
While I will say that the city of New York has no apparent trademark on itself they do take notice of government related names as shown in the case above.

1/ Copyright: Personally I think it is more dangerous than a pure GEO, but not a clear-cut violation. But you are definitely playing near the line of potentially confusing a user...
2/ More importantly. I live in the "city of" New York. Nobody uses that terminology in day to day life. I would instantly associate it with the government.
Whether you like the name or what you think of the brandability is one thing. personally I think it comes across very proffessional and credible as a video portal site for NYC.
The issue of trademark is ZERO, and that is not opinion. I have a very good friend who is a tradmark lawyer for intellectual property and he's defended people against companies like Yahoo before. He sees no validity to any tradmark claim becasue you can't trademark "City of new York" The FDNY or NYPD are 2 entirely different things.
Think about it, if this is a trademark violation then we all are in violation.
So the trademark issue is a dead issue, whether you think the name is worth $25 is another question open to debate.
If this was ever litigated, it would be a landmark case that made national headlines and went to the Supreme Court, in which case I venture to say many of you would be willing to pay my legal bills along with the ACLU becasue of the ramifications of the ruling
there is no doubt that GEOs in general do not have trademark issues when it comes to domains (at least in the US). the barcelona.com case settled that definitively.
the only mildly questionable thing about this name is if someone made the case that there was potentially confusion re: the "city of new york" as a entity as opposed to "new york" as a geographic location. and even then you are probably OK, though it is somewhat less clean than "newyork" would have been.
The point isn't who owns the domain, its about intellectual property. My argument has nothing to do with whether it was a good buy, it's about a much bigger issue. If a city was able to claim the right to a name that would indeed effect many people on this board. This issue has been written about before. The fact that this went over your head EQ, and you zeroed on the fact that you think becasue I own the domain it is an important issue is hilarious to me and to me and shows that you are being very shortsighted and petty IMO.
In fact someone already has PM'd me to thank me for the post becasue they picked up a few cityofXXXX.tv names after reading this thread. That afterall is what this forum is about, so I thought. Exchanging points of views and ideas.
And trust me, if a city did ever try to take intellectual propert rights to a city name it would have huge implications and be a landmark case across many different intellectual property rights cases, that would involve many multi million dollar businesses. But EQ would apparently be too worried about who owns the name.

Tort reform
