Thoughts About Product Domains

I have been trying to think of the registration cycle of an extension ( as opposed to the life cycle of specific domains ) . The initial waves for .tv should have pretty much wiped out the obvious domains: sex, gambling, drinking, smoking, athletics, education, general entertainment, movie titles, numbers, etc. The second wave pretty much took care of channels, such as channel"#".tv, etc, as well as basic community domains, catchy video/community forum domains, two word domains in general, etc.

So I've been thinking about what should be left, and am wondering what the value of product domains might be. For example, and here is a freebie, for those of you looking, FoosballTable.tv is available, with a non ext OVT of 8647. Now initially, you might think, heck, there's no value in this as there could not possibly be any type ins, and the product does not really scream out for a TV tiein. However, one could focus on seo properties of these domains, video reviews of products, and one could also look at how top tier companies are using the .tv extension for their marketing/advertising campaigns, and perhaps find some hidden value.

What are your thoughts for product domains such as FoosBallTable(s).tv. Is it time to go after them, do you see inherent value in product domains, etc.?

Cate.tv is on a distinguished road
Hi - I've owned sweaters.tv for quite some time now. Feedback from several individuals- top business people that run major companies whom I respect - one in this forum in particular - advise that this is a "medium value" business model. I do have a business plan of how this name/product will play out once we develop however I am focusing on development of higher value models/names - Being from a restaurant/retail/mortgage/real estate background I always love to "sell" in whatever medium - The time for that product wise will be later rather than sooner for the .tv domain names I own - Just my thoughts .... well a good portion of what's adverised on tv are (product).tv - this is a different approach and really not tied into video aspect, but only tied into the product being marketed on television.

i could see a combination working well ... take for example if you had cars.tv - would make for a great domain to market through tv commercials and the site itself could utilize videos to sell/promote/whatever.

i can see this working for quite a few products, but only if video makes sense to view ... in your example not too sure there are many foosballtable videos out there, and not to sure i'd want to watch them if there were, but it could make for a nice site for a manufacturer or someone teaching trick shots or the like.

RogueWriter,

I am a big believer in product domains in .tv, particularly in the plural version.

I think they will make for quite decent product placement vehicles.

If someone owned foosballtable(s).tv, I do not think it is at all unreasonable to go to every manufacturer, request images, product information, product videos, etc and build a site that is the definitive video resource for foosball tables.

I agree you will not have type-in, but with some SEO the site should place well and you have some crediblity with advertisers in the meantime because you have the category name.

I do not think this would every be a $500K/yr site but I don't see why it could not be a $5 to $20K / year revenue site over time if someone had the time and energy to pay attention to it. While you are not going to have youtube style traffic numbers, you will have extremely well targeted traffic!

For something in the range of foosballtables, it would not seem unreasonable to ask for $500-$2000 per year per advertiser to have the full set of features at their disposal (video, listings, etc).

So if you can keep your development costs reasonable and or use some of these services that are popping up and have time to go after the manufacturers, I think these are some of the best names in .tv.

It is close to my favorite strategy because it does not require expensive content generations. the manufacturers will be happy to give it to you...

IMO it has to be the singular or a really popular item to sell. It cant have an overture of under 30k IMO. I generally try to stay over 30k overture since anything lower probably wont convert any traffic on a .tv. I think certain priducts like cellphone, smartphone are great but foosballtable is too long and not important enough. I would however register names lilke this in .info and .us as they are cheap enough for the risk involved.

I agree completely with antonis.

Check out http://www.myweddingfavors.tv/ for inspiration.

Their pitch: "By merging the astounding selection and variety of an online store, with the in-person buying experience, MWF.TV gives you the freedom to watch, learn, and order any of the products that you see - instantly!"

-to sell to a manufacturer, the singular is better
-for a mini-portal the plural is better.

best to have both

if you can get to the manufacturers, i bet you can get some sponsorship even with weak traffic just because it is the category name, IMO

as to your other points

-.info also good for these types of things, but rarely available in my experience
-.us only for manufacturer resale for the smaller terms, IMO
