UFC .TV moved to UFC .com

The UFC (Ultimate Fighting Challenge) was a huge supporter and promoter of their UFC .TV site, but all the adverts are now for UFC .COM - and th dot TV re-directs to the COM site...

Are you saying that this devalues the .tv extention? Do you feel that it is a big loss for the people holding .tv names?

Devalues? Yes.
Loss? Yes.
Big? Not so sure.

Just that they had provided alot of exposure (at least in the US) for the extension, and many of those in their industry follow suit with the Dot TV extension. Since they have all but abandon it, should provide SOME concern over the commercial viability of the extension. Ziff-Davis abondon it along with numerous other large/good size companies.

Just passing along further info for all of us supporters to take into consideration when registering names...

UFC has not gone HUGE MAINSTREAM yet.. I think they're on their way though. They have to move off Spike to a huge network... maybe ESPN.

Granted, it is an acquired taste, but the growth they have seen in the last couple years is phenomenal. Area events are sold out immediately, and PPV is very large. The natural progression to live streaming broadcast (they provide on site video already) was an ideal situation for the Dot TV promotion and extension - thus my concern over moving the COMMIE side...

It is annoying, but I would not particularly sweat it. One website up or down is irrelevant to the future of the extension.

If I might digress:

Despite being a huge fan of .tv, I do not love using a .tv for a corporate site (which ultimately is what UFC was, even if they have TV shows, etc). The applications that seem most well-suited are around built-for-internet TV channel-like concepts (e.g. sail.tv, bar.tv etc). That probably makes me a bit more of a generic OVT fan and less of a LLL.tv than some on this board, but it is just where my bias falls.
(I know some LLLs have good PPC)

In any case, one (or 10) sites up or down is noise. The overall trend is what matters and .coms are not getting any cheaper or easier to acquire.

I wonder what the yearly registration is for ufc.tv? Perhaps they think it was a waste, given that they own the .com - I can see where they would find it hard to justify some outrageous yearly fee for a .tv domain, when they can reg their own .com for eight bucks.

I highly doubt the $500 in annual reg is a big fee for them! And if they did not own UFC.com to start, I am sure it did not come cheap either!

I tend to agree on SOME corporate applications, but IMO, it is a tremendous extension for Entertainment and UFC IS a major entertainment enterprise. Monetizing via PPV, Live Streaming of events, Video/DVD sales, the list goes on. E-Comm with Entertainment combined is a major Home Run for a TV extension.

I do agree that one company, ten companies moving in or out does not make or break the extension. Just bringing note that we are still in infant stages of this acceptance, growth, profitability.

I hear you, it is disappointing, but I still doubt *any* major corporation will make .tv their first choice of a URL if the .com can be procured. It will bleed too much traffic to the .com. If you look at the big examples of .tv corporate sites (tnt, eurovision, etc), the .com is already in use with another company and so they had no choice if they want to use their company name as their URL. Given that, next-gen video applications, startups, smaller companies, small and medium size development - that is what is going to build the extension.

This does not concern too much however. If .tv becomes the equivalent of .net or .org in valuation most people on this board will make 10x their investment and, yet, I can't think of any major corporation whose main website is a .net or .org...

I know the guy who handles their promotions and live events. I'll see if I can gather some tid-bits to enlighten this thread.

On a side note, and these are purely my thoughts here, .tv has not been de-valued. It's in its infancy stage. It will grow with the expansion of iPTV. My prediction is TV-related domains will begin to flourish (and gain in value) 2007 + as companies supporting/targeting/feeding the iPTV industry start to promote their services and products (by 2010, 10-55 billion/USD in worlwide revenues, depending on source). Dot com has worldwide awareness and "default" extension thought. .TV is prime for the iPTV industry but it will require a large push for awareness, which will eventually happen. Dot com and tv. Lovin' what tomorrow is gonna bring

Right noetic and the inherent value in .tv names especially good ones, is not selling them but developing them into profitable sites. I own Wet.tv with Westblock I realize someone could come along and make an offer and we would entertain it. But the value I see is developing a Premium Name like that which in .com was regged in the early 90's.

Nice domain, equity78 (& Westblock). Though a great name in general, it's p-r-i-m-e for the adult industry. As I am sure you're aware, the adult industry/adult videos are now implementing pay-per-minute (as opposed to pay-per-view). The adult industry has *finally* found out this market doesn't watch the entire flick (duh). They enjoy sectional clips and would much rather watch/PAY by the minute (or, until they have done their stuff). PPM is getting a lot of attention in terms of a new revenue model. Anway, enough said there...

Agreed, developing this tld, especially if the development targets/focuses/serves the tv industry (video related: vod, itv, iptv... ), will greatly leverage its value and further promote this tld as a whole.

Noetic I agree with you 100 % on PAY PER MINUTE all the exts getting regged with PAYPERMINUTE I picked up .info .biz a dutch company just picked up the .us and developed .com developed .co.uk developed .tv regged I thing going to be very big already GOOGLE results with " " over three million results I think will start with adult but will move on to other things like tv and mainstream movies maybe even ROCK concerts and other entertainment acts.
