No, I meant it as I said it - Verisign is a company ran by people and is not an enitity created of its own forces. And you are welcome - Thanks for changing the subject Line!
Ok then, let me start proceedings with a few things I would like to see:
.TV partnering with (or advertising on) cult video media websites such as youtube.com and myspace.com to increase awareness of the TLD
.TV gifting the Hollywood Radio and Television Society "hrts.tv"
.TV entering ino an appropriate agreement with a leader in the newsmedia industry to allow best (marketing) use of "news.tv" which is wasted sitting on the shelf.
Well I don't think Verisign has to gift any domains, this is a business not a public service. I think everything has its place business, community, philanthropy.
First and foremost Verisign is a business that sees News.tv as one of their primary assets. I don't personally, and do not agree with the $1,000,000 price tag. Let's be real News.tv is nowhere near as great a name as Verisign thinks IMO. Reason? When it comes to news people look to trusted sources CNN, FOX, BBC, Canal , NBC, CBS, ABC and all the other major stations in every country around the world. No one is going to go to News.tv for their news unless one of the big companies just mentioned does register it. Why would they? they are promoting their own brand. News.tv is a nice name don't get me wrong but $1,000,000 a year no way. If you reg it as an entrepreneur what is your revenue model? People will advertise on the big news sites not News.tv IMO I will take Kids.tv over News.tv anyday so I think News fairly valued at $10,000 Just my opinion.
Problems with Verisign
#1 that they bought .tv in the first place. .tv corp would be much better off as a nimble upstart instead of being apart of the .com .net Oligarch Verisign. DOT Tv is a small piece that does not get much attention. They want the high reg fees but have no time for marketing or creativity. THe Hrts auction proved they have no clue how to promote this extension. One of the best names in the space KIDS.tv went for $10,100 when a name like Beaches.tv was purchased for $5,000 or Mail.tv for $35,000. No offense but if Mail could command $35,000 Kids worth at least 5 times that.
#2 They are closed minded, when presented with ideas that would benefit the ext and them at no $$$ out of their pocket just marketing and promotional effort NO interest.
#3 Know what a premium is and what isn't. Jet.tv cannot be $500 and GOL.tv $5000 and WOW.tv $50,000 I mean just at least show people you graduated 6th grade with that logic. Keep some continuity.
Agree with all your points, but I don't see it as philanthropy (neccessarily) to gift a domain if the benefits from the exposure that the gift creates outweigh the cost of the gift.
Simple example:
Kids.tv - say $10,000 a year (which I know it is not) - 10 years revenue = $100,000
Kids.tv if owned by, say, Nickelodeon = daily advertising for .tv and potential for thousands of new registrations.
Lets say 1,000 new registrations @$30 (because the person registering is smart and uses godaddy with a discount code) = $30,000 x 10 years = $300,000*
Why gift HRTS? Simply because if HRTS are a significant partner of .tv, but don't even use the TLD what does that say about .tv?
Why "discount" news.tv - simply to create some serious interest in .tv. I can only think of a few others .tv's (MTV, kids) that have the potential to get as much "traditional" media exposure as news.tv.
Public awareness of .tv is critical if it will ever become the media domain of choice (which it should be) ahead of .com.
Generics, schmerics with .tv. I regged commission.tv as one of my first .tv regs and I regret it. This is not the TLD for generics (at least not yet)!
*assuming all registrations in year one, none subsequently, but renewed annually
I agree with alot you pointed out there Grant they just don't think like that.
Now it looks like Major league baseball dropped some .tvs and then some others www.tv shows avail but are not like Redsox.tv and yankees.tv but one like rangers.tv double bonus too Texas in Baseball NewYork in Hockey $500
FInally WESTBLOCK someone regged one of my favorites that we talked about for the coop CONCERT.tv $10,000 a year a Neighbor of RJ's in San Francisco regged for five years, Lets see what he does with it.
For those that want developed examples check out www.travelvideo.tv pretty cool Rogue Writer you have a lot of good two word domains like this I have no affiliation
