Internet Domain Auction Threatens 285 U.S. TV Stations
Domain names using the call letters of 285 U.S. TV stations — including major affiliates of ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX — will be auctioned to the public by GoDaddy.com over the next few days, according to an investigative report released by AndyPurdy.com.
Highly-prized 4-letter domain names using the call letters of 285 U.S. TV stations — including major affiliates of ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX — will be auctioned to the public by GoDaddy.com between Saturday, July 19, and Wednesday, July 23, according to an investigative report released today by AndyPurdy.com.
The TV call-letter domain auction is the largest ever of its kind. Releasing the domains to anonymous bidders around the world may have a serious impact on how American broadcasters maintain their online identity, particularly in light of the upcoming switch to digital broadcast.
Digital broadcast and broadcasting online mean no antennas and tuning to channel 4. The address becomes important as a URL. Programming is going direct-to-domain, and a smart stealth group of Hollywood-savvy investors understood this and built an acquisition strategy that will be attractive to the network's new local divisions, as well as independents like E.W. Scripps and Pax that have holding companies and synergies among stations in different geographies. Remember there was channel 5, 7, 8, 9 in Boston. On the web, there will be one Boston.TV. Remember the long post I bored you about with WBZ. Look again.
I am working on an article about this inspired by the people I am meeting and the plan and progress I've uncovered. These are the next domain billionaires and the thing no one knows is that they also have web, search and yellow pages experience at executive levels, and have already created (under dotCOM) a very powerful advertising network- that's profitable without dependency on Yahoo or Google. Among the fresh features they bring to the space are video tours of real estate for sale, hotel and convention virtual tours, live broadcasts of personal and corporate events, 3 minute infomercials about local products, companies and statesmen.
EXPECT this to be huge. And I'm pleased to say we've enlisted these wise men as charter members in GrandNames/VIP. They will be sharing opportunities and ideas within our private community that also includes prominent journalists and a couple of the most successful domain investors on record- each with a history of million sales to end-users. Also signed some major corporations and two emerging global search giants from outside the US. It's a very exciting time as we can pool our collective resources and do everything different- and everything possible to ensure domain dreams are made real.
I'm going to cut the enrollment off soon, because unlike other brokers who work by robots and 10 million line items, this effort will be powered by people and distinguished by results. Only after getting to know our members, their needs, backgrounds, names, opportunities, hopes, dreams and plans... can we target end-users with the personal, hands-on strategic marketing push that's been missing from the game so far.
I've spent two years experimenting with this blog and know how to get attention, and how to get the word out and in front of anyone you choose. In upcoming webinars with members, I will share these tools, tips and techniques as well as documentation I've collected that will blow minds.
Of course, you know this... because you are here right now.
There may never be another opportunity like this.

Now the question is how did GoDaddy pull this off when everyone thought they were hostage to enom and the high renewal rates. Same way I did with another register. Success begins with understanding. You can get all that you need right here- it's all hiding in plain sight.
