![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | My reason is simple. In future there will be competition between Computers and Mobiles. And a Law/Norm will be forced by Mobile Operators and Manufacturers that only .mobi sites will be displayed to make Mobile Internet Popular. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I disagree that .mobi is the "future of mobile internet usage". I see it as a viable alternative to the other available options (m.site.com, site.com/m, etc) -- an alternative that is ultimately more memorable in my opinion. I see two choices for end users: Choice 1: m.site.com mobile.site.com site.com/m site.com/mobile wap.site.com etc... you get the picture OR Choice 2: .mobi Once .mobi is finally instilled in the minds of consumers, I think that .mobi will be the more memorable choice. As we know, there is a good deal of discrepancy currently in the mobile internet as far as web addresses go; users are currently faced with over five choices, each which are commonly used. In a perfect world, companies would redirect all the above choices to their mobile site, but as demonstrated by the below examples, this just doesn't happen. Best Buy m.bestbuy.com - works bestbuy.mobi - works mobile.bestbuy.com - doesn't work bestbuy.com/m - doesn't work bestbuy.com/mobile - redirects to Best Buy's "Cell Phone" department wap.bestbuy.com - doesn't work NBA m.nba.com - works nba.mobi - works mobile.nba.com - doesn't work nba.com/m - doesn't work nba.com/mobile - goes to the PC page about their mobile services, but does not display on a phone wap.nba.com - works Fandango m.fandango.com - doesn't work fandango.mobi - works mobile.fandango.com - works fandango.com/m - redirects to PC site fandango.com/mobile - redirects to PC site wap.fandango.com - works Wachovia m.wachovia.com - doesn't work ????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/dot-mobi/528415-mobiwire-com-free.html wachovia.mobi - works mobile.wachovia.com - doesn't work wachovia.com/m - doesn't work wachovia.com/mobile - works wap.wachovia.com - doesn't work BMW m.bmw.com - doesn't work bmw.mobi - works mobile.bmw.com - doesn't work bmw.com/m - unrelated page bmw.com/mobile - doesn't work wap.bmw.com - doesn't work Fidelity m.fidelity.com - doesn't work fidelity.mobi - works mobile.fidelity.com - doesn't work fidelity.com/m - doesn't work fidelity.com/mobile - doesn't work wap.fidelity.com - doesn't work Amtrak m.amtrak.com - doesn't work amtrak.mobi - works mobile.amtrak.com - doesn't work amtrak.com/m - doesn't work amtrak.com/mobile - doesn't work wap.amtrak.com - doesn't work I would provide more examples, but I have one minute to post this on time to meet the deadline. I think my point is clear, though -- there is currently just too much discrepancy. A common choice would be very useful imho (although not absolutely necessary), and .mobi fills that void. Many companies won't see a need for .mobi, but that's fine (their loss ) But .mobi is, at least in my opinion, more memorable than the first set of choices, and hence, a better choice for advertising purposes. I don't know about you, but to me, those choices in the first category above all run together. If I see mobile.fandango.com being advertised somewhere, and a few hours later I try to remember what the URL is, I would probably not remember if it was mobile.fandango.com or m.fandango.com or wap.fandango.com or fandango.com/mobile or fandango.com/m. If I pick the wrong one, I may not get to the site at all. DotMobi stands out.????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=528415 I'd write more, but I'm out of time. I think you can see where I'm going with this --> .mobi is all about memorability, and will compliment the mobile web very nicely. Oh, and one more thing: we can't forget about the whole mobile-specific site thing. Some sites are designed for mobiles, not PC's, and hence there is no need for a .com at all. DotMobi will work just fine, and is likely much easier to aquire than the .com (which is and always will be "king"). EDIT: Added some more example sites. .
