Apartment.mobi - Bought for $6000

Just reporting that I won Apartment.mobi for $6000 at Sedo auction last night.

I feel its a solid price, in the current market - yet, I hope it'll turn out to be a terrific investment down the track.

there are so many other keywords available for much cheaper price. Unless you have any specific plans for the domain, the price seems to be too high.... but thats my opinion.

IMHO: There hasn't been good signs for dot mobi lately... like:

-Full internet browsing capable phones (the new iPhones)
-No "quick" option for dot mobi on the iphones
-A few other things

I think you paid too much for this long keyword unless you have some development plans. If someone is looking for apartments they would probably want to sit down and look through their opinions instead of trying to look on their phone.

i know, right...

i prefer to zoom and scroll with my iphone.. its fun reading that tiny text... and i really do die a little inside everytime i have to enter a .net or .org TLD on my iphone... you know, since there isnt a shortcut key for it.

to heck with sites that fit my screen and context!

i have one and its extremely annoying... which is why a lot of popular websites re-direct you to a "mobile version" of their website when i access em with my iphone.... its the exact same concept as .mobi websites

I agree, in some ways, that this price -doesn't look 'cheap' in today's market - and today's .mobi circumstance.

But, that's not how I'm measuring this purchase.

(i) This name is a central name/term, in a central, global, market segment - ie Property....The word 'Apartment' is as relevant in the US, as it is in Europe, as it is in Taiwan, or Istanbul. Its a globally used term for this segment (whereas, say, 'Condominium', or, 'Condo', or 'Flat', is much more localised to, say, the US, or UK market, and therefore more limited).
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=500692

(ii) I see great ROI/profit value-applications for this name...Both as a stand-alone developed site - or, as a future end user sale (there are any number of major end users in the global Property market that will see HUGE value in owning a true generic for their industry, like 'Apartment'. One day this could be a monster re-sale).

(iii) All the metrics are right for this name:

Domain: Apartment.mobi
Frequency (Google) - 227,000,000
PPC Ads # - 58
Max PPC Bid - $2.31
MAX PPC Income/day - $311.83
Overture/mo - 1,739,412
Wordtracker/day - 1,223 (37,913/mo)

..ie Get a site with this name/natural traffic potential up the Rankings - and, the prospects of real value are much better than 70%-30%, imo.

(iv)The name lends itself well to 'on-the-go', imo...As the habit of mobile phone information reliance becomes ubiquitous (as I believe it will), then a mobile 'Yellow Pages' site with available Apartment listings for sale, or rent in your area + maps + prices + brief descriptions + showing times etc etc, that you can view anytime, anywhere (and move quickly to secure) makes sense.

(v) The only other thing is whether - in the mobile context - .mobi will have traction 'out there', in the future.....For me, that's essentially only a branding & awareness issue....And, that can be fixed, because .mobi-designed sites work, and are convenient (no scrolling, fast loads etc), and this competitive advantage will become obvious as awareness spreads, imo.

So....With all that going for this name, I feel $6000 is a fair investment risk, for a likely very high return, over time.

That's my thinking on it.

.

Great name Chris! Congratulations on a solid purchase

I think 6k is a bargain for someone with sound development plans.

I keep hearing these arguments about .mobi and the iPhone... They really make me laugh. I remember bringing up UMPCs back in early 2007 and asking what members here thought about them making .mobi irrelevant -- the only thing they'll make irrelevant is the iPhone 5 years from now.

I invested in .mobi knowing full well that some "advanced future PDA" would render .mobi useless from a technical perspective but I still don't see anything on the market other than .mobi which could guarantee a mobile user an enjoyable mobile experience. If Mtld started releasing the premiums and enforcing what they promised to enforce, I'd really consider investing heavily in the extension as I really do see a future for it as a .com alternative if it's properly managed moving forward.

Congratulations Chris on your purchase! Definitely a sound investment.

While, at first it may seem that Hurley4540 made pretty much the same old arguments that any of the naysayers would do- I would like to congratulate Hurley on a tip, that may not be so obvious, which he included in his comment. BTW, Hurley I did REP++ you for the tip.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=500692

Chris,
You could add a personal opinions section or review section for apartments you list. Maybe some sort of feedback system not unlike eBay's which can provide a better picture of the apartments that are being listed.

I've bolded and underlined the tip below for clarity.
