Why would a .mobi like this redirect to a mobile .com?

Golden Tulip hotel group one of Hollands largest hotel chains has a .mobi site but when you click on it it directs to a mobile.com site. My question is why would they do that? Why not just let it be a .mobi site?
Regards
Fred

Could be they already had a mobile.com site and they simply saw the value of using the mobi

If I already had a mobile version of a site, I would do the same. What does it really matter? As long as the mobi s being used (and ultimately promoted) who cares?

Ok yes but I think it would be so nice for .mobi if groups like this advertise the .mobi site on their regular .com sites. Thing is they dont which sure dont help spread the .mobi word. And I dont understand why they dont.

It could also be a 'branding' registration.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if it is solely a "defensive" registration, why bother doing anything with it? Unless, of coarse, they think...God forbid....some folks might just type mobi in?

Maybe they will develop one day, maybe not.
My guess is they grabbed their name to prevent possible cybersquatting by another party, and that's it.
I am sure there are quite a few .mobi that are just redirects.
The problem with new sTLDs is that often TM holders will feel compelled to register just to protect their brand (.eu, .mobi, .asia...). That does not mean they are going to actively use these names.
Another example is Verizon (mobi-skeptic company), they registered verizon.mobi. But it looks the domain is not active at all because it has not name servers set... another purely defensive registration
Quote:
Verizon says it doesn’t see any “business need,” but the company registered verizon.mobi to make sure nobody else takes it. “What we would not want to happen is for this name to be an infringer’s paradise,” said Sarah Deutsch, associate general counsel for Verizon. “Most of the new domain names have been failures and the vast majority of valuable real estate still rests in .com.” I agree, and it’s frustrating that domain registration has become a defensive move. Plus, most .com sites are now optimized for mobile, so why push people to another domain name?
