When .mobi was first annouced man was I excited about it. But a couple things are starting to bug me...

1.) The restrictions placed on .mobis may make them non-competitive. I mean they want you to validate the code to make sure it serves on a mobile device correctly. Most of my .mobis get the vast majority of their traffic from PCs. Very, very little traffic of the traffic comes from mobile devices. The .mobi extension has been relatively good to me in that a lot of good domain names were available but they have only been good for me in capturing some desktop browser type traffic.

2.) The iPhone is rewriting the rules. This is the baseline mobile device from everything I read and experience. It displays most all sites perfectly fine. 2 years from now there will be many mobile devices out there with similar capabilities. Microsoft is going to have to make Windows mobile competitive to stay in the mobile business.


Mobile devices of the type envisioned for .mobi are just not interesting and unless they change the rules the .mobi may become of minor importance.

Interested in others ideas as to the way .mobi needs to go to stay competitive.

In any maturing market you will get people feeling bearish, normally 50% of the time.

Im sure its been thrashed to death here. The problem still remains that the success (or lack of) is still just speculation and the OP makes some good points but you know what will happen here if both camps get stuck into a debate..

What I cant wait to see happen is a discussion based on a strong trend or a growing confidence or a tangible yardstick.

I'm going to close this thread and try to be more vigilant in ending similar threads here in the future. These issues have been discussed time and time again and there are literally hundreds of posts on them already for the interested observer.

This is being done in an effort to remove threads which add no substance to the .mobi subforum whatsoever, yet have a high probability of ending up extremely heated. You're welcome to do a search or merely browse the forum -- the relevant pages aren't too hard to find.

I strongly encourage anyone to post any new reasons you believe .mobi may be in trouble, but please have the courtesy for the sake of all our members to do a thorough thread search to ensure it hasn't already been discussed in excess. We can often learn from differing opinions -- provided they're a new and refreshing perspective on things.

Most people here are eagerly awaiting the .mobi Sedo auction results and once they're over, we'll no doubt have to reevaluate .mobi's place in the domain ecosystem.
