Using .mobi can prevent potential "m-dot" bloopers

Note: My apologies to "mobility ex-pats" (a nice phrase coined by Badger in another thread here at NP) if you have already seen this.

Standardizing on using the .mobi domain for mobile web sites is a great and timely idea. The confusion of not having a standard and using the many subdirectory possibilities on existing extensions such as m.xxxx,ext or mobile.xxxx.ext or xxxx.ext/mobile etc can also present unintentioned consequences.

How many other companies and organizations can you think of that could be presented negatively or misrepresented by using the "m.webname.extension" format for their mobile content?

Here's a few interesting ones that could be avoided by going right to "webname.mobi" instead:

m.erde.ext
www.erde.fr = Erde is a french trailer manufacturer

m.ess.ext
www.ess.com = Enterprise Solution Services, Inc.
www.ess.net = Environmental Support Services, Inc.
www.ess.ca = Expanded Systems Services Ltd.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/dot-mobi/368230-using-mobi-can-prevent-potential-m.html

m.ass.ext
www.ass.org = adult site
www.ass.de = German furniture company

m.ate.ext
www.ate.net = Advanced Tech Enterprises, Inc.
www.ate.fr = Agences de Transactions Europeennes

m.ale.ext
www.ale.com = Acquisition Logistics Engineering
www.ale.org = Atlanta Linux Enthusiasts
www.ale.fr = inkjet marking equipment manufacturer

m.uff.ext
www.uff.com = Trade Tech supply chain ASP
www.uff.ca = Unitarian Fellowship of Fredericton

m.ing.ext
www.ing.com = ING a financial services company
www.ing.org = Islamic Networks Group

m.ask.ext

m.iss.ext

m.ope.ext

m.angle.ext

m.align.ext

...etc ....

My thoughts are that you seem pretty happy about it. You also seem to enjoy any "mobile web" news/developments that don't involve .mobi, and you seem to take particular pleasure in pointing out real or imagined flaws in the ways that established companies develop and promote their mobi sites. That is just my observation, and I certainly don't have any problem with people taking positions that I don't agree with. But since you asked for us to share our thoughts.....................

Concast?

Do you share their ethics, Jeffrey?

Heck, I bet soon Enron will be advertising menron.com while Adelphia will promote madelphia.com....

Jeffrey, you have lots of work to do my friend. Evidently, there is a very active Concast bashing thread that exists here at NamePros. I suggest you extinguish those Concast flames....immediately!...

Here is where this Concast hate-speech is happening....

Jeffrey... also, digest this on this lovely New Hampshire day, here are delicious Wikipedia morsels regarding your beloved Concast or Comcast...

A recent third party survey of citizens in a Comcast franchise area found approximately 62% of the respondents were very dissatisfied (along with another 25% who were dissatisfied) with the cost of cable television service.

^ Michael, what does any of that have to do with their use and promotion of m.comcast.net (the topic of this thread)?!?

I have no relationship whatsoever with Comcast™ ... and your question regarding, "Do you share their ethics, Jeffrey?" is both out of line, off topic, and highly unprofessional IMHO.

Thank you for understanding.

I don't know the correct answer, but my guess is they started using and promoting m.comcast.net before anybody started using .mobi. Maybe they will change to .mobi when their m.comcast promoting has run it's course.

Do you know Comcast's specific long-term commitment to m. ?

Fair enough, it's a deal!

I had it in my Signature to illustrate that there are some corporations using and extensively promoting their respective "M Dots", as well as having a friend who actually uses that exact site for his email and news, etc.
After careful consideration, and for continued friendly dialogue here in the #1 Namepros .MOBI Forum™, I have removed it from my Nameporos Signature© IMHO.

I think it's a no-brainer that comcast.mobi would better suit their purposes than m.comcast.com, unless they plan on undertaking a costly marketing effort. This just goes back to the question about standardization between the m-dots, /mobile, /m, ...

I'm not saying that .mobi will necessarily be the choice... It's obviously far too early to tell for sure, but I'd certainly say it's a much better choice than anything proposed to date. Who knows what the future will bring? Perhaps a more suitable contender will be found in the future, however as I see it now, it's either .mobi or browser detection scripts.
