| Account Closed | The future of the desk-top PC is nigh! :) Seriously, it really is.... you can't turn in any direction without seeing how this is going to turn out.... whether or not it takes the .mobi with it is another question but I still hold out that it will, save only for the fact that small screen devices need web-sites that can be viewed on small screens without straining yourself. watching videos is fine but when it comes to text content -you need something that is easy on the eye. It always amuses me when someone says wow, look at this - the whole things on my screen! I say; impressive isn't it.... now what are you going to do with it exactly? ;-) IMHO - a small screen option = important! Even if the two formats are run in parallel! We will see soon enough I'm sure. Gary |

| www.LLLL.com Forum Moderator | The mobile internet will be big, no doubt... But anyone thinking the masses are going to switch from their desktop/laptop to a 2 inch (4 inch tops) screen the majority of the time are missing a few bolts (quite literally!). Reminds me of the WebTV fad and other poorly planned/anticipated misses (see Intel's Itanium sales predictions for a good example of not learning from experience). Will the mobile web be huge? Absolutely. Do I think for 1 second that there will be more average time spent on cell phones than on desktops? Hell no. And even the "more cell phone users than desktops" debate is shortlived when we have organizations building $500 houses and <$200 laptops. If you can build a laptop for <$200, you can build a desktop for pretty cheap IMHO. |

Certainly, there will be some good uses for "low quality" traffic. But for most of us, we'll just be parking (or developing) them, hoping we get a lot of high quality traffic and designing our sites with high value traffic users in mind.

well thats good to know but that is a completely different subject.. the topic at hand is a pretty general thing... the mobile internet, getting big, a "shift" away from pc's (because the possibility didnt exist before, so inevitably there will be an initial 'shift') thats all.. pretty general stuff

But if the mobile web is primarily going to be "big" or "comparable to the desktop internet" in sheer size due to the much larger third world country base vs many Americans and Europeans using their phones for Internet rather than their desktop is something which will fundamentally affect the value of .mobi names (perhaps even .coms) in the end, should they become an accepted standard for the mobile internet.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Now the internet will go through a similar paradigm shift...mobile. Some will get their fill via mobile and say forget it to their PC but most I think will have both, each filling a different need. Mobile internet can very much excel over a PC in many areas, getting maps and directions is a big one. Simple news is another one. I think that segment will take off with our need it now mentality. And I'm sure there will be ways it is used 2 years from now that many of us haven't even considered. It's not a zero sum game.
