Iphone Won't Run Full Web

The new Iphone coming out would not run the full web,so this technically means some site would not be access properly.

The release of the iPhone will be a VERY good thing for .mobi, because...
1) it will raise peoples' interest in using the internet from a mobile phone
2) due to its limitations they will want to visit websites that are mobile compliant

From the article:

Quote:
Near essential applications such as Flash and Java will not be viewable at all on the iPhone and JavaScript applications will be limited to just five seconds runtime when using the built-in Safari browser.
I wouldn't be surprised to see .mobi mentioned in the upcoming iPhone reviews. The next few months are going to be very exciting!

The flash issue is due to apple wanting to push quicktime.

Apart from YouTube there is not a site on my 'daily view' list that has flash as the main functionality. As for java... do people still use that online?!

Ironically, this domainstate page, mbmagazine article and the techdigest would all be viewable ie. no java or flash

Hardly 'wont run full web' in my book

I concur that. The most important thing right now is trying to get people to use the internet from their cellphones. After this goal is achieved, people will naturally find their way to .mobi site sooner or later.

Time will tell as users get the Iphone in their hands but I'm predicting that it will only serve to illustrate the need for a "mobile internet". I've said it before but I think Apple is shooting themselves in the foot with their ad campaign.

I concur. When people find out what the experience on the 'regular' internet is, they are going to be either returning the phone, or finding out about .mobi sites and using them.

To be honest, I think there are going to be a lot of pissed off people returning this thing.

"Near essential applications such as Flash and Java will not be viewable at all on the iPhone and JavaScript applications will be limited to just five seconds runtime when using the built-in Safari browser."

I think they should start backpedaling and strike some sort of deal with mTLD to save face

I believe that this thread just answered my question posted in the other thread (similar to this) is that iphone will not run full web properly, instead more compatable to .mobi optimized sites! Thanks for posting saltysoda

You know guys, seriously this issue could really bring .mobi to the forefront of public minds more than anything I can think of.

When there are 10's of millions of these things floating around, people are going to want quick and fast content with low bandwidth and minimized scrolling. I don't think we will have to look for them, I think they will find US!

Cancer Survivorship
ATT hired 2-3k more workers and "hired extra security" for their iphone releases. att just dropped the "ATT, cingular's name thing," going to the "the new ATT." There will be major sales and major hype. Why would Jobs put in extra battery life and a glass screen (was plastic) a week before release? Reviews will be big.

I think that with iphone's release, and later microsoft's surface, surfacing will be a large ticket item. many don't know what it is and will think iphone brought it to the market. (techinically they may be out with it first). So a major question may be can one enjoy the internet surfacing a small screen?
And a second question may be would one rather surface a small screen or use a dot mobi. I reiterate that many will not be able to perform surfacing and will come to enjoy .mobis.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=341908

I also think smart companies will try to get their .mobi AND use m. AND xxx/m to get everyone looking for them. the cool thing may be that when people use .mobi and like it, they may search for .mobi's - that's what I'm looking forward to.

Type-in traffic, it will happen with .mobi, just a matter of time. Right now, I'm more excited about being able to almost steal .mobi's on the aftermarket right now. I'm in some of the SEDO auctions, hoping to pick some of those up.

Redirect solution: people hate being automatically redirected, people want to choose
iPhone solution: people will have a negative experience when they couldnt browse the whole www.

There is a need for "the Mobile Web".

Sorry, off topic...

I don't expect any of my mobile devices to run Flash yet. I didn't expect the same of the iPhone. I can access the whole of the web on my mobile phone already; it's not something I would purchase the iPhone for to be honest!

I think what we are seeing here is an exceptional amount of hype pre launch. Going back to the TM issue of Apple vs. Cisco.

To be quite honest, this whole iPhone thing has been in the news, blogs, and hyped by everyone that I am thinking "My, what an excellent job everyone else did at selling this product for Apple."

The amount of free press and publicity that has been going on for a couple of months now is unquestionably billions of dollars of free advertising for Apple. If you were to factor in each time it was mentioned on television, a website review or blog, all the prime news sites and tech site headlines, we are talking thousands of hours dedicated to one product.

People fail to realize that controversy is free publicity. People, particularly here in the US, also fail to realize that the technology is nothing new. They have been sold on the hype and a packaging that is already in use and in existence in other parts of the world. It just happens to be new here in the states.

I can only begin to guess how much Nokia, Samsung, or any other manufacturer would have to pay to get the same coverage for their product.

So congrats to Jobs and Apple and Cisco for becoming the "Paris Hilton" of the tech world.

Since Americans really don't know much about the mobile web, I think they are getting duped into thinking that everything they can do on a PC they will be able to do on this, and it's going to be just as easy and fast, etc. It just isn't true.

Once the reality of browsing the "non-watered down" internet sets in, people are going to be either returning the thing or looking for mobile compliant sites to surf.

It is now known that Iphone would be using safari browser and no one knows for sure if this would grant universal access to all site.

Other competitors might certainly not use safari browser but this could flood the mobile web with various kind of browsers as competition heats up.
However,is not the amount of browsers out there that really matter but ability to access the mobile web from any browser and this is where I believe dotmobi comes to the rescue.
If various competitors start launching various kind of browsers for the mobile web ,this may only increase the non uniformity regarding the mobile web and it seems dotmobi's mtld saw this coming!

Well said. And one of the most important things is that ".mobi is not a browser or a watered down version of a browser!" It is an extension that places standards for the enduser's benifit for the new era of the mobile world.

I use a mac everyday, and have been for sometime, and I know safari has issues with some sites, I love it, but i would rather use a standard browser for some of my sites that I go to... For example phonebet.com for my horseracing, it doesn't accept safari.

isable for all of us to list with DIR.mobi and add a prominent link to our sites to give those options AS an option.

I have nothing to do with DIR.mobi and make no money from it or by referring it. But even more so I see the value of actually have a directory of .mobi sites.

It may involve even more tweaking by content, subject, area, region, country, language...but it will be a win-win for all of us who have an interest in .mobi.

No doubt they will improve their product. If they tear down the walls they've built and reduce the prices a bit then I may even consider one. But since I will be shopping for a new phone in about 6 months, it most likely won't be an iPhone (and I'm a hardcore Mac user) which puts my next window of opportunity out another 2 years thanks to contract pricing (which saves me about 5 hundred a year with 4 phones on my plan not including the reduced hardware costs).

That's when, June 30th?

Or what day is it that Jobs is opening it up to third party applications so the damn thing will work better than all the hype?

But, not to worry. All mobi sites will work flawlessly on the iPhone and others.

Shame we gotta wait for them to get it right.

Wait...we don't have to wait. There's more than just the iPhone:
