How does this affect .mobi?

Before I start off I'd like to mention that I have nothing against the .mobi extention. I neither love it nor hate it.

But I wanted to get your ideas.

http://www.gazotto.com/2007/deepdish...e-browser.html

Microsoft recently unveiled DeepFish. While not out yet it's basically a mobile browser that would let internet websites be viewed in the same wa as on a PC.

It's very similar to the Safari browser on the iPhone.

Doesn't this pretty much elimante the need for the .mobi?

A thread was started about this before but not much commented on.

Also, this other new thread sheds some real user experience with mobile web use that adds substantively to the discussion IMO.

Microsoft also came out with the UMPC (ultra mobile PC) and TouchPack software which has simply not taken off like they had hoped.

While the UMPC is a great tool, it is still not PORTABLE enough in the sense that a current and future generation cell phones can do nearly every thing the UMPC can do. You can't talk on a UMPC and you can't put it in your shirt pocket.

It looks like the focus right at this minute is on Apples iPhone and how everyone is rushing to get theirs to market to compete...or be left sitting in the dust.

Deepfish is a step in the right direction, but still, a full size page in essence? Then you select content? I'm not sure, I'd actually love to see one and try it.

But if Microsoft is not careful, they are going to saturate the market with products nobody cares for and that will not make investors too happy.

I know they have the capital to do this, but there is no end to what they are releasing...be it software, apps, hardware, or products in any class.

I'd like to see how long it takes to load the pages! There's no way they could get photos etc to load so quickly, even small images on 3g takes a long time let alone a full website via an iphone or whatever else is being offered up!!!

"DeepFish is hoping to solve this problem. The browser allows users to view sites just as they would on a PC. And because the browser only loads what you are looking at, instead of the whole page all at once, it loads much quicker."

Anything is possible, but if the DeepFish can't keep up, then it will be DeepSixed.

So, what does microsoft want us to do? Carry this and a cell phone?

"Currently Microsoft doesn’t have any announcements regarding any specific releases. You can however check out DeepFish and also download it for a limited time. Microsoft will be looking to get feedback on the browser to make it better."

Um, I can't talk into it and it doesn't talk back.

Hello? Anyone in there? Hello? Can ya' hear me now? Hello?
