Anything I should know before getting into making something on Photoshop?

Thanks.

I think most common file types are fine - gif, jpeg, png, bmp.

I prefer gif because I can get smaller file sizes.

Recommended file size: 3K or less
Recommended width: 160px

I'm curious, how did you decide on 160px width?

If the logo is more of a picture then use a jpg format, as it is best for photos. If the image mostly large blocks of color use png or gif, as they handle vector based images very well.

Screen resolution is 72 dpi, so there is no need for your image to have any higher resulotion than that. As far as the size, that is up to you, but of course the smaller it is the faster it will load.

I think the 120 pixels is the width of the smallest mobile devices, so I would definately not go wider than that.

I tried using photos shrinking them and everything, it's a little false using purely the dev.mobi to give you an indication, you have to try your designs out on your mobile phone before hand, if your logo or pic takes too long to load it defeats the object for the guest browsing your site, thats why i opted for jazzed up text rather than a pic or logo in the end i want my site to be fast as lightning! But it does admitidly make the site look more boring than one with graphics! But alot more user frendly at the same time!

Sometimes, a little image can make a big difference! I think if you stick to a 72 dpi image and don't go bigger than 20 by 20, it will still load quickly and add a bit of spice.

Does anyone know if there are issues with transparency in gif or png with different models of phones?

Also still curious regarding about the reasoning behind the 160 px width "rule"

I don't want to speak for anyone but I'm guessing because that will fit the screen of most 3G phones out there.

Here is a list of common screen sizes, that I got from the opera website.

(pixel width x height)
128 x 128 pixels - Nokia Series 40 devices. A very common device size.
176 x 208 pixels - Most Nokia Series 60 version 2 devices
176 x 220 pixels - Most Microsoft 2003 smartphones
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=306295
208 x 320 pixels - Most UIQ version 2 devices
240 x 320 pixels - [Quarter VGA] Most EZX, MS Pocket PC in portrait mode, UIQ version 3
320 x 240 pixels - Same as above in landscape mode
352 x 416 pixels - Nokia N90
640 x 200 pixels - Nokia Series 80
640 x 320 pixels - Nokia Series 90
640 x 480 pixels - [VGA] Large screen phones

The W3c Mobile Best practices lists 120 as the minimum usable screen size for developers. http://www.w3.org/TR/mobile-bp/#IMAGES_SPECIFY_SIZE
