I'm a little confused as to how the .mobi marketplace forum works. Is that for listing domains at auction sites or can I hold an auction in there?

The Marketplace can serve multiple purposes. You can announce names are for sale or currently in auction at a place like Sedo, you can ask for offers in your thread, you can ask for PM offers only, you can list it with a BIN (buy it now) price, and you can auction the name in the thread. Be clear with your intentions and be sure to mention the payment details, such as paypal or escrow.com.
