be interested to hear which way would be best to go with this.
Should i develop as a real estate portal? or more in depth?
The populations over 7 million so which development process would best suit?

I think it is reasonable to build it in stages. RE is a natural but you can add all the other tourist segments as well over time, hotels, restaurants, etc. While it may be tempting to auction, a name like this can be a nice cash cow for you in the long run.

IMO, the best choice is to sell it to longisland.com if they are/will be interested in it.
longisland.com and longisland.mobi are a perfect match. hehe...
If you are interested to develop it. whatever, maybe hotel booking is suited as .mobi site.
Interesting..I myself hold Topsail.mobi. Topsail is a very popular island of the coast of North Carolina and has a Topsail.com and Topsailisland.com site.
But your island is a lot bigger though.
You really have a great name on your hands. I would not sell it right now and I would not offer it for sale to LongIsland.com as that could be used against you in a WIPO as showing bad faith. (I know Long Island is generic but there has been some horrible WIPO decisions lately and I would not want to see you lose this name).
As far as location names go, I can't think of any recent sales off the top of my head.
However, I would developed it as a Major Portal overtime. You could get some money now selling it, but that would be a one time deal. I bet in the future you could make in a month or a few months what the sale price would be today.

thanks for your input. I know , it was someone else mentioned trying to sell to someone with another extension. Don't worry, i'm not stupid enough to try that. It's a generic location, & cannot be tmed. I am interested in developing it as an interesting site for people on the go.

Great domain! Would make an excellent mobile site for city guide, information, and services. It has potential to become a .mobi known to every Long Islander.
what i wonder, is how much are people going to be able to do with names that cover a lot of geography ?

can you do a good site just using click through's or would you need to have a database back-end and web-search functions so people could find what they need

though it would make a dynamite partnership to hook .com .mobi up together maybe you should talk to them about a development deal .. even rent them the name?
i'm sure you are on safe legal ground though for sure
long island is great, and that's not just because its where im from
great potential for this name! do us all a favor and develop it - there is no limit to where this can go.
long island is not only home to a huge population, but there is also a concentration of wealth, celebrities (the hamptons, east LI), nightclubs, bars. plus, since it is an island, all the usual "island" activities apply - boating, fishing, swimming, diving, etc.

I do not know much about the mobi extension just yet, but I know plenty about Long Island and you have yourself a great domain.... As you said, developing a major portal is a full time job, take it from me, I know: www.longislandexchange.com - but it is well worth it....
