Is mobi Hosting Gonna Be Cheaper?

i have always assumed that bandwith issues for hosting mobi sites will be pretty much nonexistent (except for major video and or audio sites like youtube etc) because the coding for a mobile site is a lot more minimal

am i missing something, or am i correct in assuming that mobi sites should be a lot cheaper to host (in terms of bandwith and server space) ?

Well it stands to reason that you can get a cheaper hosting account with a mobi domain. I personally like servage.net for $8 per month you get a lot of stuff...Dreamhost is OK but I think Servage does a better job.

It won't make any difference for me. I pay a flat low fee for unlimited domain names and I'm not near my limits yet (thats a bad thing I guess).

I use hostgators baby croc. It's 9.95$ a month and you can have multiple domain names. I haven't had any major problems with them thusfar.

Can you just add your .mobi to your current hosting account, eg. like GoDaddy?

I think you can now, I'm not sure. I know, before that you couldn't with their basic hosting.

I was using 1and1 till couple of weeks back, but now moved to a VPS ( cost 10 times more then 1and1 shared ) solution as it is eaiser to move to dadicated server very eaisly later. The problem with shared account is that as your site grows , it becomes painful to manage. If you think your site is going to get huge traffic or may need bigger database then you need to look for other options as well as eairly as possible.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=284870

For my site, dir.mobi , the traffic is exploding and I am making some money using admob , so decided to go with VPS route. It could be very difficult if one fine day you suddenly maxout on the resources and have to shut-down your site becuse of the resources. Also our NP member movingconcierge really scared me with his experience ( other many members) with 1and1.

Vcool

PS: It took me more then a week for my site to completly work on another host. The script that works on shared host may or may not work without any changes to the code and/or server paramenters on another host. It would take a while to completly understand and debug the problems. It is a painful process and just wanted to share my experinece.

Did you consider a dedicated server at 1and1?

Yes, I did. Their website says "sold out". Looks like they do not have any servers available right now. Also it is more then twice the cost of VPS. I can eaisly migrate to dadicated later from VPS compared to shared.

Sold out... not good. A little too much advertising and not enough data center building.

I don't get the question or your post. Are hosting companies charging more to host a .mobi? A .mobi site is just like any other, smaller but the same, so hosting fees should be the same. The great thing is you could host a bunch of sites on a cheap shared server account.

right, this is what i assumed but wanted to make sure i wasn't missing anything

what i am getting at is that since mobi sites are small by definition, they would be exceptionally inexpensive to run and perhaps people will be owning vast numbers, or put another way, since the revenue model for mobi is not yet fully developed we may see people buying and maintaining mobi sites that appeal to very small niches and doing very well, i don't know ....

I guess I just see it as an opportunity for us a developers to get more site traffic for our buck. Money saved, money earned.

It should only make a small difference to disk space and a few kilobyte per hit.

So unless you have a very high traffic mobi site, the hosting costs won't be very different.

I hope to develop my mobi hosting sites soon, and then it won't cost you anything! :-)
