Translation help please! portuguese? "POVO"

I was looking thru some unregistered LLLL.mobis and one of them caught my eye so i did a bit of research and registered: POVO.mobi - it sounded very catchy.

But I need translation help please! portuguese, I believe?

I used an online translator for the word:

POVO = people

but people = povos (portuguese)

but then povos = peoples?

huh?

is POVO widely used? according to google, it is... but can anyone offer some more info?

what exactly does POVO mean?

thanks.

fyi, povos.mobi as gone. but I already registered POVO when i found out. damn.

Povo stands for "people", also for "family".

Povos stands for "peoples" (nations) and "families".

You should check that the word is widely used in Brazil as well. Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese can vary widely and sometimes completely different words are used.

I speak fluent Portuguese, from Brazil, lived there for decades.

Povo is a not-so-classy way to say "people". A much better word should be Pessoas, instead.

The word PovoS is used as "nations, cultures, communities".

The use in singular and plural forms are not widespread for "family/ies", at least not in a formal way.

I don't se much attraction in this word Povo for Portuguese-speaking people, even in other countries where that language is spoken.

However, sure, it sounds nice in English, PoVo, and you may find a suitable application for it.
