I hope the following will be good news for those who have invested in .info.

Background

About two years ago I managed to register a ccTLD domain, the development use of the domain was obvious and involved the production of a major Geo-site/sites. Immediately I started work on researching the subject matter and formulating a business plan. It was during the business plan evaluation that I realised that my reach to the US market would be weak without spending a fortune in marketing and advertising. Unfortunately, not having won the lottery, the projected horrendous cost getting into the largest national market would be too great for me to proceed.

Then about 18 months ago luck struck (no I didn't win the lottery) I saw some US geo.info domains for sale, a quick few checks such as Google search stats, comparrison of .info and .com values in the aftermarket (ignoring the 'dreamers'), etc., it seemed that I could utilize these domains to get a very tiny finger tip hold in the US market. I therefore immediately purchased the domains and started hunting out more in the same niche. Ever since that first purchase I have checked daily for drops (when my epilepsy would permit) and even purchased some on the aftermarket!

Today

I now have a portfolio that covers over 1,760 US Counties, Parishies, Boroughs, and Independent Cities with populations of 20,000+, this represents approx. 97% of the total niche! What of perhaps the most important statistic available, Google 'local' exact searches? For these domains Google totals circa. 3 million per month, so that will equate to about 4 million searches a month in total accross the search engines. This definately shows people are 'associating' with their counties, etc., even though there is little in the way of developed sites to find.

Let's face it folks, I should never have been able to accumulate this portfolio, and its creation has been more by luck than anything else. It should also be taken into account that 'IF' the geo-domain .com owners had got their act together and actually co-operated together, then this portfolio and the resulting opportunity for mass development would always at best have been second fiddle.

Development

I have tried to obtain the services of a 'developer', offering a 60% share of the gross revenue for development and continued running of the proposed websites, unfortunately to no avail. I therefore have no option but to develop these myself, that means they will be nowhere as good as they should be and is therefore in reality an unfortunate waste of potential, but I have no realistic alternative.


So what is the upshot of all of this?

1) I have now stopped 'domaining'. From here on in I am just going to liquidate what domains I have that are not associated with the development plans.

2) I will not make the mistakes Marchex made with their 'Zip Code' website portfolio fiasco. Only a fool does not learn by another's mistakes.

3) I will utilize this portfolio to enable and support the development of the single ccTLD domain into an internationally recognised Geo-based site.

4) I will welcome contact from those .info domain owners who either own the unhyphenated domain where I own the hyphenated, or more especially from those who own any of the relevent 15 domains where I own neither (hyphenated or unhyphenated). My hope would be that we can work together.

I would look into Drupal if I were you.

There's a module in particular that will let you manage/build all your domains with 1 install/database.

Over and above the unfortunate fact that probably half or more Americans couldn't name a county other than the one in which they live, how are you dealing with the fact that some counties share similar or identical names?

Also: Do you not consider it instructional, or at least worth contemplating, that you can't find a single developer willing to take this on for a 60% cut?

I would have to agree that county isn't a consideration for most. It generally comes up in discussions of property and sales taxes and police and fire protection. I live in New Mexico and can tell you that DonaAna county is Las Cruces and Bernalillo county is Albuquerque. It seems like most searches would use the city name rather than the county. Albuquerque auto parts rather than Bernalillo County auto parts.

Firstly, thanks for the PM's, I will respond to them later today.

Secondly, the fact is that circa 4 million Americans search for the '(countyname) county' each month, so perhaps it is a case that people 'are' looking up their own county or a nearby county. The argument that most Americans do not know any other counties apart from where they live is therefore irrelevent. Indeed more than this, it shows that local people are searching for a 'local site' - their county site. WIth this information monetization becomes a breeze.

FM, as for your point that up to 30 counties (in the case of Washington County) can have the same name is so simple to deal with it took me seconds to work out how to differentiate the visitor target required. However, for obvious reasons I think, I am hardly likely to blurt it out here. What I will say though is that I wish more counties shared the same name!

As for developers not willing to take on the project - this does not concern me in the least. In fact I would be worried if developers were falling over themselves to take on the project - my specifications, though not severe, do require committment, and over the past decade I have found that 'developers' are not too hot on that subject. If I find a developer/development company that I feel can do the work, expand the sites, keep them updated, etc., then I shall be eternally thankful, but more than this - I shall be surprised!

Back in 2004 I had the idea the internet would be really popular in politics. I looked around and started registering names of the form xxGOP.xx where the first xx was the state abbreviation. For example USGOP.com, NMGOP.com, etc. I got about 35 of the dot coms and had to do dot net or org for the others.

I couldn't believe the political parties hadn't already registered all of them. I even sent an email to Forbes magazine pointing out why the political parties should be all over these names.

I was never able to interest anyone in any of them. I eventually figured out that websites need constant attention to get and maintain good rankings. Politicians think about the next election cycle.

Anyhow, I wish you well with your collections.

My wife just came into the office and raised her eyes and walked out again when I told her I was just 'answering some posts'!

Mhdoc and Sdsinc I will answer both posts together if I may.

Of course local websites need constant attention and updating, the ability to do this though on an en masse basis had to be worked out during the business plan stage. I have successfully done this. (It should be noted that the majority of developed local websites fail to do this.)

All sites will run on a common site template, this allows 'branding' to be achieved but is also good for visitors/users who will become familiar with the site layout. This common template will enable portfolio wide changes to be made very quickly, but of course allow for changes to individual and sub-portfolio wide changes to occur easily.

Remember I have been working on this for two years, in that time I have been able to put the plan through the mill numerous times. Many problems have arisen with ideas and plans during this time, each time I have either had to solve them directly or indirectly or remove the cause of the problem and instigate an alternative path to achieve the same goal as originally sought, then of course this solution would be put through the milling process.

I am not saying I have everything right, let me assure you it is far from it. But I have managed to solve many of the basic problems associated with site development and mass site development that will give me a much better than 50/50 chance of success. The highest hurdle was actually acquiring enough of the portfolio to make it succeed before the 'Big Boys' cottoned on to what was happening. Thankfully it was only this past few weeks when one of them turned their attention to the domains and suddenly started buying them (hello Hong Kong).

I really, for obvious reasons, cannot be more open at the moment, I hope my reply helps. What I can add, with certainty, is that unlike a certain geo-website city .com portfolio mine will be developed with the local community in mind.

I certainly want to see you, or anyone for that matter who has the vision and balls (or ovaries), succeed that takes on such a daunting mass-development task that genuinely wants to be relevant to a local community... but I also agree with the voices that have mentioned that the "average" american likely doesn't know many other counties outside of their immediate surroundings (not that this, in and of itself, is detrimental to the success of the plan) and it being XXXXcounty (instead of just XXXXX) and the .info extension to boot will likely make the road even more bumpy.... but if you have a vision, a plan, have the time and money to invest in bringing it to fruition then I really, REALLY hope that it pans out. Being that driven to systematically register domains in such a niche with the aim of making a network of "local" websites shows how committed you are to it..... I hope that a developer sees the, at least long-term, chance in it and helps you make it succeed...... SP

If you get a moment could you please PM me the 'one' that isn't included in the portfolio? My guessing is it is one of three that I would 'love' to be included.

I must admit at times I have been daunted, but actually working through the planning, hopefully identifying many of the pitfalls and working them out over the past 2 years has allowed me to be fairly confident. The workload is huge, especially without the expert back-up, it will mean that development will be staged and will in itself create hiccups, but it will get done.

I appreciate greatly your kind words and those of all others who have echoed similar sentiments.

It is one of those weird things in life, you can have a great idea but many people do not see it until 'after' it has proven itself (or failed of course). I have never even contemplated getting a 'backer' - that is if you ignor our attempts on the lottery on Saturday nights.

I just wanted to say good luck to you Bill, I share the same dreams but mine are more locally based as I'm working alone. I also think your county developments will do just fine, I have PolkCounty.info which monetizes well without a community, but the community is key IMHO(for ranking).

MHDoc, I can say I have done dry runs of the proposed system, all the basic 'mechaanics' work, however not being a professional designer or programmer I am aware of my limitations and the 'flaws' in both design and 'programming' this results in. Hence the reason I am sitting here reading these damn Joomla! books!

I'm not trying to be mean, but I hear echoes of mistakes I have made in the past. Being introverted and technical I tend to think getting the system running is what is important. I have had several painful lessons teaching me that sales and marketing should come first, with technical elegance coming later.

Maybe put up a couple of WordPress sites immediately and try selling from them?

Firstly, these sites are not going to be 'for sale', the sites are to be run as a business. Perhaps after two or three years then I might look at selling the whole international group of which of course the US County.info will be a part of.

Secondly, the monitization of the sites is not a problem at all, indeed that was one of the simplest 'problems' (if it could be called that) that I of course had to sort out during the business planning stage. If this is what you were referring to then I must agree that many businesses, both on and off line, rarely seriously work on this aspect of planning.

Hope this 'clarifies' the situation.

I think what mhdoc is trying to say is you can maybe do a few test runs on a small bunch of those sites (if you haven't done it already) and see if the technical and monetary part works out as planned...
