Right, this is gonna sound so stupid to you all, but I have to ask, what exactly do you do in the domain name industry?!?!?!?!? I am starting to show advancing interest in domains, but am curious as to how you make money doing it?
Do you just register domains, then go on eBay and auction them off? So, like, you could register a domain for $9.99 and go sell it on eBay for $25k?? Lol, sounds fun!
I am just kinda confused, here are my questions:
1) What exactly is "domaining"?
2) How do I get started in it?
3) Any other tips?
you are right in saying that you register domains and sell them, however it gets slightly more difficult than that when you begin to think that most good domains have been taken, so that leaves you wtih 2 options:
Find bargains and buy them off people
or be very creative, work one step ahead and find domains which fit extensions, e.g. ski.sh sold for a lot recently, on its own .ch is not a very good extension but because the domain fits the extension it became worth a lot more.

So, all you do is find good domains, register them / buy them of others, and then sell them on for more than you paid? Sounds like a good biz to get started in!

register/buy a domain
if it has popular keywords in it and if you will not develop it then park it and make money from traffic/clicks
if you want to develop it, program your site, add content, advertise it, integrate a forum or mailing list, sell your developed high traffic and revenue making website
parking domain means:
you change your dns settings of your domain as ex: ns1fabulous.com and ns2.fabulous.com
Fabulous publishes on your website advertisement links of the companies which they work with.
if a visitor visits your websites and clicks any links on them, fabulous earns money from the companies they work with and gives you a commission for this. fabulous wins, you win.
Think about these 2 main things before registering it:
Its brandability
and its dev potential.
If you can say yes to both, then get it. If not leave it. Remember:
No dev potential = no end user = no sale

Nice way of putting it Ferman, but you must remember not to be biased just because you like that domain, be overally harsh just to be sure that your not conning yourself into regging/buying it.

Read a lot of these forums and others about domaining, pay attention to the appraisals, and other things. Don't buy a bunch of domains thinking you will get rich until you know a little bit more about the game. Something I learned the hard way.
... yup, excellent advice. Also, don't drink and domain.
The point about developping sites is really important. If you have zero web dev skills, find a friend or partner who can at least help with a bit of coding. Even just a small site with 1-10 pages of content relevant to your domain can help in getting traffic and ... (potential investor) eyeballs to your site.
Developing sites and selling them on is something I have not really considered. I can design sites well, I run my own business doing it, in fact, but it just seems more trouble than its worth - doing all this work, building the site, directing traffic to it and spending funds on advertising just to sell it! I dunno.. lol.
