The Rule Book: Vol. I

OK, seeing as this is my One Year Anniversary Here... I felt the need...perhaps just the desire to share what I've learned by coming to this site in hopes of sharing it with "New Players" to the game. Hopefully, this will help you in figuring out what to do or buy in this very unstable business and business climate.

1) When buying a domain for resale, do your absolute best to attain the .com version. While a .net is nearly as good, it simply will not get the type in traffic the .com version would and if it is something you develop into a website, it will/may only serve to bring more traffic to the .com site because most people just simply do not pay attn.
Buyers of domain names know this, hence the premium for .com names.

2) Before you buy a domain name for resale or development, there are certain steps you should take:
A) Using google, type in the domain name as such: "www.Name.com" (notice, use the quote marks!) and note the number of referances!
B) Look up searches for that word/term! Use http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/ by typing in the name.phrase and seeing what the most popular terms searched for are under what your idea is. This will aid you in not only buying the correct domain name, but also for/if you put in Meta Tags on your site!
C) Use the Dotster.com domain name search tool! Not only is this the best, but it is also the most accurate as per what is available. Also, it has a fairly decent suggestion tool for you to browse through for more ideas.
D) Purchase your domains through GoDaddy.com! While their may be a difference of opinion as to who is best or cheapest when reg'ing domain names, for me, customer service stands above and beyond all else... and GoDaddy.com leads the pack... by miles.

3) Develop develop develop! Unless you have an amazing website, most will ignore it and youll only accomplish wasting your money on a domain registration unless you can somehow get it developed with a bit of appropriate content.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/domain-newbies/64964-the-rule-book-vol-i.html

4) Keep an eye open for expiring domains! Make sure you do a bit of research before you buy an expired domain though, many times... a domain has skeletons in the closet (think of that ex g/f with all those issues to deal with lol).

5) TradeMark names= Bad Idea.

6) Be on the Ball! Check Cnn.com DAILY (or, one of my favorites, www.WorldNetDaily.com and it's business section) for new, exciting and upcoming ideas! Many times these names have yet to be TM'd and registered!

7) Read These Forums and the SitePoint.com forums! Never EVER be afraid to ask questions, but as a rule here as anywhere in life: Believe only Half of what you see and none of what you hear.

8) Do not, ever never never post a domain name on these forums for ideas on if you should buy them! If it is good, I mean.. like.. www.Dodge.com good, someone will reg it for you lol. You cannot blame them, when the potential for millions of dollars is there, only our own stupidity can keep us from greatness.

9) Typo domains, unless a their a non trademarked, .com.. with alot of errors in the search's (see above) are a bad idea and simply a waste of time.

Hopefully, these few ideas will help you begin in this volatile business in a safe and sound manner. We all waste money in this game, the trick is... to make more than you waste.

Above all, remember... this is a game.. much like monopoly. Only we play with real money.
So have fun and best of luck!

I'm sure that by default all resellers try to do that, only thing is that all the good names are long accounted for, or the price (auction/straight buyout) is too steep.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=64964

You could of course buy the name at so-called "end-user" prices whatever that means, but then you become a BUYER, not a reseller.

It's really a question of compromises you need to make, and the risk you are willing to take.

Godaddy is one of the worst registrars in the business in my view in terms of doing nothing when domains are stolen, trying to hold domains hostage, and trying to charge unreasonable fees (such as a $29 fee if a UDRP dispute is started against you). Aside from people who are only going to be register one or domain and just want something cheap godaddy is to be avoided.

Some solid advice in there for newbies and I'd agree with it all down the line, with the exception of your favorite registrar. As a bulk buyer, I like eNom and Fabulous.com the best, but GoDaddy is not a bad recommendation to new domainers.

Thanks for the helpful post, Lee. Happy anniversary!

Yea, I guess Fabulous is not too well known. If you're own 100+ names (w/ any registrars) you can get a wholesale account for $6.95 registrations. Prices for retail are pretty high if I remember, so not one I would recommend for new domainers, but I enjoy using them for my new registrations.

but... that is the final cost even when paid for with a credit card. Unfortunately, fabulous only does com/net/org/info. You need a backup registrar for .biz or .us registrations. The stats, parking, and renewal reminders (even if not registered there) are very useful.

Enom $6.95 accounts sound cheap, but they ding you for 3% for using credit cards or paypal. You have to deposit $7.15 to have enough for a $6.95 registration ($7.17 X .97% = $6.9549).

The thread is kind of drifting, but my two cents worth is:

Awesome start to the Rules Book, LeeRyder! You are generous to spend the time.
I sent some rep...

I think GoDaddy is OK for reg, but the SUCK big-time for backordering.

Some suggested topics for Volume II:
-Parking
-Backordering
-Hyphens, friend or fo?
