When is it too late to transfer a domain? I have a few that expire in about a week, is that leaving it too late?

I have been transferring some to godaddy from fabulous a day before and sometimes on the exact day they expire with no problems, earlier would be safer but generally you can transfer right up to they expire, if using some crappy registrar that takes days to respond to anything I probably wouldn't press my luck.

haven't really looked as I am transferring everything in to godaddy as their pricing is tough to beat with coupon codes/account rep and more importantly being able to pick up the phone 24/7 and get someone to answer it, I'll still use moniker for my .mobis as they are a tad bit cheaper but I plan to consolidate the other 4-5 registrars I use all to godaddy.

yep i might just stay also, thought i could short cut the renewals with a cheap transfer but it seems hard to find cheap. I'm thinking maybe just using codes as you say, i can see i'm able to get renewals for $7.17 .com & .net which is not too bad i suppose.
