Buying new, never used domains is discouraged?

I read your "word of advice" manual, but haven't found a clear statement to whether this is discouraged, and why.

By buying new, never used domains, I mean purchasing "this domain is so great I can't believe its free!" domains from godaddy for 10$ a piece.

Thanks for clarifying that.

I wouldn't say it is discouraged, more that it is not advisable without researching the domain.
If you use a registrar who provides a refund window, you could rush in and register then do the research afterwards. Usually there is a reason why these too good to be true names are available, otherwise it would be snapped up before you got to know about it

Buying fresh regs is fine, as long as you don't expect to find gems that you can easily resell for huge profits.

I feel you CAN find gems, IF you know how to sell an idea to a potential buyer. It's all about where you're marketing it and if that person that has an interest in building it out or wants a domain with a larger history.

I buy domains to build then sell down the road. So buying for a bargain IS possible, I've done it many times myself. Just don't spend money to spend it, make it a calculated risk.

I totally agree. I think every starter should ALWAYS keep this in mind. When I started registering domains, I thought I could be lucky enough to find gems like the ones that sell for millions available for hand registration. Truth is you can still find good names, but that requires a lot of research and you'll be finding just *good* names, not premium though.

remember 1 thing , if no one ever regged NEW names then we would just keep inflating the value of existing names.

ALso remember that NEW ideas often need NEW names

Twitter.com was a New Registration not that long ago

If you have specialist knowledge in a particular area it is quite possible to be able to hand register new domain names which have value, which other mainstream domainers may have missed because they did not know that particular niche.

I have sold to end users in specialist areas new registered names that had good Google Adwords search criteria and which met their commercial needs.
