Did I mess up?

I see a lot of for sale domains or people willing to buy domains and they give a list of registrars that they will deal with. Did I make a mistake buying my domains at 1and1.com? I had an account with them already, so I used them to register them (plus the $5.99 wasn't bad). Now I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't have. Anyone had any experience in selling their domains from 1and1.com?

I personally am not a big fan of 1and1.. some people don't like them..

Most popular is probabily godaddy, namecheap, registerfly and enom...

Not a big fan of their control panel ~ Not recomended for anything but maybe Parking or Development .....

If you plan to turn domains over pretty quickly ..... You better go with one of the ones used by members here "godaddy, namecheap, registerfly and enom etc ..."

they will be harder to sell if they are not popular domains. ALso keep in mind that only US and Canada users can have an account at 1and1, so your market will bne smaller

Especially effective for .co, .in and .co.in domains. I also offer drop lists for these extensions.

They are still sellable from a transfer perspective while at 1and1, IMHO. It's just that they are not AS easily transferable, common-place, convenient for potential Buyers as the others mentioned, in my view.

Yep, some of my first (and best) registrations were done at yahoo. I will transfer them to another registrar if/before I sell them. Now, I use Namecheap, and I will probably open accounts at a couple of the other places that handle transfers easily.

If you are selling to end users I dont think its that big a deal where the name is at.

If your selling to Resellers thats when it could possibly work against you if the reseller doesnt have an existing accout where the Domain is at, we tend to be picky

Then again if its a name the buyer really wants, it dont matter one bit, they will open an account. Only happened to me once that a buyer backed out as far as I can remember, which isnt too far

Mistake? It depends. I also have used 1 and 1, and although they are ok, they definitely have some flaws. If you are planning to transfer them, it may be a little difficult, but you can definitely do it. Then again, if you are planning on keeping them for awhile, then you are fine. Hope this helped,

Tom

Too expensive to transfer them all (42) to some other registrar now. I'll know that next time, or maybe just transfer the ones I'd be interested in selling out to a broker. Will chalk it up to newbie learning. I do have plans to develop some of them.

Just want to say that though I have not done business with 1and1 but I have heard that they are terrible (Not just this thread) so... Spring for the 2 or 3 dollars and register somewhere better.

As a reseller, I prefer not buying names at odd registars, just for the sake of keeping track of them, the logins/passwords, and expire dates. I avoid godaddy if it's near renewal, because they have a rule not allowing transfers out within 60 days of an ownership change. I don't like name where each individual name has a separate management login. If they aren't combined, it's too many to keep track of. I prefer registerfly becaue transferring a domain to a new user is as simple as pushing to their email address. I like selling from enom, because even though a little more work, I can put the name in a retail account and make a buck or two if they leave it there and renew through my reseller account or register new domains. I absolutely hate wildwest domains because you can't push them to another wildwest reseller account or godaddy without a transfer, and each wildwest reseller has different logins/passwords and prices, as well as the godaddy 60 day transfer hold rule.

In buying for resale, It's easier when the names are with enom, registerfly, dotster, or a lesser extent godaddy. Namescout wouldn't be bad if prices weren't $25+, and I avoid NSI like the plague.
