How to make profit with cheap domain sales?

I'm totally missing something here.
So far i did sell several dropped domains for $ 50 or more. So a little profit for me.

At this forum i see many cheap domain names, for example $ 1.00 .info and .net domains.
Currently i'm using Moniker, register prices are $ 6.64 for .net and $ 8.02 for .info.

If someone sells a .info for $ 1.00, while is costs $ 8.01, don't they lose $ 7.00 ???

This is probably a very stupid question, but I just can not understand.

Many thanks in advance !!

The cheap domains that are sold less than registrar value, are probably failed domain name investments. Better to get part of the money back for the domain name than none at all.

They invested in it, then when they found out that it's not making money in parking or has no resell value they decided to sell it for cheap. Hoping to minimize the loss of their investment.

Basically, the same principle in a traditional business, especially clothing business.

Actually, if you are talking only about .info domains...

At one time, there use to be crazy sales on that extension to try to drive up sales for it. There were registrars offering .infos for 99 cents for the first year on a new registration. So if you see someone selling a .info domain for $1.00, they are most likely trying to get back the money they paid for it before they have to renew it at regular price.

I agree with snowbird. I've had to sell 100+ .info domains in the past for about $1-2 each because I didn't want to renew them.
