| Electrifying Guy Forum Moderator | In most cases, the expired name will be retained by its registrar between 1-45 calendar days. The registrar can then request to have it the name deleted if they're unsuccessful in securing renewal payment for it within that period. If it's a generic top-level domain (gTLD) like .com, .net, .org, .info, or .biz, it will be released to its respective registry and be placed on "hold" for about 30 calendar days, popular referred to as the "Redemption Period". During that state, only the registrar where it was last registered with can redeem it on behalf of the domain's last registered owner. If the domain name is not redeemed within those 30 days, it'll be on "Pending Delete" for about 5 calendar days more, then it should be available on its 6th day at roughly 1-2PM EST. There is one exception to this: currently registrars having partnerships with backordering services (like NetSol and SnapNames) will transfer an expired name to anyone who made a reservation for the name in that backorder, or award it to the winner of a backordering auction if more than 1 was made. This means that if the domain name is backordered, the registrar won't delete the domain name and send it into Redemption but instead transfer it to its new owner. |
