Acceptable Forms of Payment

Hi,

What do you all consider acceptable forms of payment for domains, aside from Paypal (I hate them) or a merchant account (which I don't have). Is asking for a certified check or postal money order a deal killer?

My sales are probably:

89.5% PayPal
5% Escrow.com (They accept wired payment, credit cards, business checks, etc.)
5% Afternic or Sedo
0.5% other, including check, money order, etc.

If someone wants to pay with cash or check, I generally push them to escrow.com where they can pay just about any way they want. It just takes a little longer. I've also discovered that payments over about $600 are actually cheaper with escrow.com than with PayPal fees, AND you can often get the buyer to pay the fee easier since they see value in the escrow service itself.

I generally offer Paypal at no extra fee, where I pick up the fees just because it's quick & easy to get paid. Buyer pays fees on escrow.com below $500 sales, I split it on $500 to $999, and I pick up all fees on $1000+ sales.

If I sell by check, I only transfer the domain after the payment has cleared the bank by sufficient time (10 banking days). However, I give them control by changing DNS to their server when payment is received if wanted.

In your case I would also consider money orders, checks (allow DNS change while processing) and western union also.

Deal Killer

I would consider a check a deal killer.

I accept PayPal.com primarily, but have also used iKobo.com and Escrow.com. There is something fishy to me about someone who wants to use a snail payment rather than be part of the quick and easy payment world that we live in today. Personally I do a deal and then move on and I don't want to be sitting around for a check to clear or a money order to arrive.

Just my two cents.

It's going to be tough when you limit yourself. Paypal is the standard.
If I am not accepting paypal (like yourself), then I wouldnt limit myself with any other options including checks, mo, western union, propay, stormpay, 2checkout, escrow, iKobo.com and whatever else it takes to make the deal go threw. You're going to need all the options.

If you hate paypal so bad why not open an account (get a free checking account.. they're all over) and always remember to withdrawal the funds from both your paypal and checking account. That way no one can take it and youre at no risk because nothing is there.

Even if it had lots of zeros and commas? If there are enough of them, I could be very patient waiting for a check to clear.

Big companies don't have paypal, and some don't like to use a credit card on it. Some escrow companies have limits on the amount they'll accept on credit cards. I once sold a domain to a division of Proctor & Gamble in which they were prohibited from using paypal by company policy. They finally paid by corporate check with escrow.com if I remember correctly.
