TLDs in order of marketable preference..

Howdy!

So, what's the generally accepted order of marketable value when it comes to the tlds?? I imagine .com is still far and away the most popular and in demand tld but what comes next?? I've heard .net is next best to own but others say .tv Thoughts????

I’d say .net and .org fall inline behind .com. Then maybe .de. Not sure where .tv’s and .info’s stand at the moment, does anyone really know?

It really depends on the purpose of the Domain and Where you are to me - Of course .Com is first choice !

My Personal list : (Not rated by total sales or trends at all)

.Com .Us - For portal Reasons maybe some other Country Codes .ca .cn .de
.Net
.Org
.Info (This will Bother a few of you - But I have my long term reasons)
.Biz .Cc .Ws .Name (EDIT : Forgot .biz)

You'll probably find lots of threads in the archives arguing this, but here's my personal take on it as of now in my order of preference.

.com - Far and above the most preferred, but good names are hard to find and bad ones hard to sell.

.net and .info - I currently think they are about even and each fits certain uses better. Two very versatile extensions based on intended use.

.org - good, but it still has the "non-profit" or personal atmosphere which is good in some instances and not so in others.

.us or your own ccTLD - .us is also an up and comer rising in popularity. in that it the extension only means you are in or deal with the US market, it is extremely versatile and can be used for anything from business, information, personal, etc.

.biz - an up and comer with some good one and two word usable domains not too difficult to find or afford. Names must fit the extension though.

.tv - recommissioned ccTLD of the island country of Tuvalu - useful if you deal with television and can't get the .com. Expensive! Otherwise, why?

.ws. .bz, .cc, and soon .pw - more recommissioned ccTLD's - okay for personal sites, and maybe okay for very strong single keywords. buy to develop, but not to resell (at least not in the short term).

Well, thought out.. I'd agree. I do think .com tho is due to lose some of it's lustre to some of the newcomers.. I also wonder how .eu and .mobi will do?

Definitely depends on what kind of site and audience it is for. For example, if I would be to create a Swedish language site for a Swedish audience I would go for .se primary and cover up with .nu and .com. For most international sites I would chose .com and only cover up with .net. In some international cases such as open source related and other non-profit I would go with .org and cover up with both .com and .net.

Overall I would say .com, .net, .org in that order are the best. After that it all depends on the type of site and audience. I would be very careful and try to find alternative domains before chosing .ws, .mobi, .pw, .eu etc.

It depends on the domain and potiental site but as a general I would say:

1) .com
2) .net, .de
3) .org, .uk, .us
4) Other major ccTLDs, .info
5) .ws, .biz
6) Small ccTLDs
7) .???.???

I don't think .mobi is going to be your normal domain for several reasons. First it's sponsored, and I think it may be more controlled and held closely to the sponsor, similar to .aero and .coop. The reasoning is:

A. Web sites will likely be designed for smaller screens and lower bandwidth.
B. The actual sites may be more closely controlled to avoid the possibility of "bad software" that could damage the mobile device O/S (viruses, spyware) or unsupported web software or add-ons.
C. I think the domains will be very expensive to help contol access and support the large electronics companies behind it. Possibly requiring licensing for access to their closely held customers.

.tv ahead of info, biz and org??? care to explain that one? Are you having some successes selling .tv names?

I was only ever interested in one .tv name becuase Tuvalu is a major diving destination. I was extremetly please to find scuba.tv was available! ...until I got the page to pay, and it was over $100,000 (per year) to register. Granted this was shortly after Tuvalue re-purposed the domain for public use. Maybe prices have come down, but I've still not ever registered a .tv and see very few being sold or actively marketed at the thread is about.

BTW, dive.tv is still available for a mere $2700 per year with a minimum of 2 years reg. Anone got $5400 laying around to speculate with and wish to pay that rate not once, but ANNUALLY?

there have been some recent .info sales, check out dnjournal. I actually haven't seen many .tv sold for very much (unless you consider the registrations cost) Is there a recent list of .tv sales anywhere?

WOW we surtely differ someone with .name over .info WOW all I Can say is WOW but good luck with that one. I like .tv But there aren't too many sales at least made publkic seems like many say oh Privately many sales. HOPE SO
